TLDR
The theoretical advances described in this special issue offer a number of possibilities for intervention development, but it is proposed that the theories should be explicitly linked to the major theories from which they draw and reflect the context sensitivity and dynamic nature of the intervention target.Abstract:
Progressive advancement of interventions in health psychology requires improvements in underlying theory. The theoretical advances described in this special issue offer a number of possibilities for intervention development. These include advances in understanding the role of cognitive biases, priming effects, effective planning, the role of specific affective states, and the influence of attachment style on response to interventions. For these advances to translate into progressive improvements in interventions and realized gains in public health, we propose that the theories should: (a) be explicitly linked to the major theories from which they draw; (b) reflect the context sensitivity and dynamic nature of the intervention target; (c) show convincing evidence of improved effectiveness of interventions they spawn according to rigorous criteria; and (d) address the full translation process, including implementation by health care providers and engagement by the target population.read more

Future directions in physical activity intervention research: expanding our focus to sedentary behaviors, technology, and dissemination
TL;DR: PA technology research should focus on large randomized trials with evidence-based components, explore social networking and innovative apps, improve PA monitoring, consider the lifespan, and be grounded in theory.

Digital Behaviour Change Interventions to Break and Form Habits
TL;DR: This work critically review the main theories and models used in the research to analyse their application to designing effective habitual behaviour change interventions, and synthesises these theories into an explanatory framework, the Habit Alteration Model, and outlines the state of the art.

Influence of Behavioral Theory on Fruit and Vegetable Intervention Effectiveness Among Children: A Meta-Analysis

TL;DR: There was mixed support, however, for enhanced dietary change with multiple theories or a formal planning process, and more research is needed on theory's influences on dietary behaviors to guide future interventions among children.

Changing physical activity and sedentary behaviour in people with COPD
Vinicius Cavalheri,Vinicius Cavalheri,Leon Straker,Daniel F. Gucciardi,Paula Gardiner,Kylie Hill,Kylie Hill +6 more
TL;DR: The theoretical model, the ‘behaviour change wheel’, is described and an example is provided of how it can be applied to a person with COPD and a range of devices available to monitor time in SB are described.

Conceptualizing and intervening on affective determinants of health behaviour
TL;DR: In order to better understand the determinants of health behaviour and develop novel targets for behaviour-change interventions, the scope of HBTs might be expanded beyond their current emphasis on the expectancy-value framework.

Science and human behavior
TL;DR: The psychology classic "Walden Two" as mentioned in this paper is a detailed study of scientific theories of human nature and the possible ways in which human behavior can be predicted and controlled from one of the most influential behaviorists of the twentieth century.

The behaviour change wheel: a new method for characterising and designing behaviour change interventions.
TL;DR: Interventions and policies to change behaviour can be usefully characterised by means of a BCW comprising: a 'behaviour system' at the hub, encircled by intervention functions and then by policy categories, and a new framework aimed at overcoming their limitations is developed.

Reflective and Impulsive Determinants of Social Behavior

TL;DR: A 2-systems model that explains social behavior as a joint function of reflective and impulsive processes is described, which extends previous models by integrating motivational components that allow more precise predictions of behavior.

Sick individuals and sick populations
TL;DR: Aetiology confronts two distinct issues: the determinant of individual cases, and the determinants of incidence rate: if exposure to a necessary agent is homogeneous within a population, then case/control and cohort methods will fail to detect it.

Making psychological theory useful for implementing evidence based practice: a consensus approach
TL;DR: A set of behaviour change domains agreed by a consensus of experts is available for use in implementation research and applications of this domain list will enhance understanding of the behaviour change processes inherent in implementation of evidence-based practice.
