Abstract: El Bildungsroman es un genero novelesco que, sin ser exclusivo ni originariamente aleman, llega a su forma clasica en Alemania. El termino, del aleman Bildung (periodo de formacion posterior a la fase correspondiente a la ensenanza primaria) y Roman (novela), es empleado para designar a las novelas cuyo tema principal es la representacion literaria de las experiencias de un joven protagonista, desde su ninez o adolescencia hasta su madurez, en un proceso de aprendizaje cuya finalidad es lograr la consolidacion de la personalidad del individuo y su integracion en la sociedad. Asimismo este proceso formativo del protagonista evidencia el conflicto entre sus deseos y los intereses contrarios de la sociedad. De acuerdo con la critica reciente, el Bildungsroman femenino difiere del tradicional genero masculino tanto en los aspectos formales como en los hitos y metas del desarrollo y en las expectativas sociales que enfrentan las protagonistas de este tipo de relatos. Al igual que en los Bildungsromane masculinos los finales son variados y, al tratarse de un genero socialmente condicionado, el exito o fracaso de los protagonistas de estas novelas hay que interpretarlo a la luz del contexto social en el que se desarrollan. De hecho, las multiples manifestaciones del proceso de desarrollo de los protagonistas de las novelas de formacion cambian con el momento historico y con las condiciones culturales y sociales de cada sociedad.
