Abstract: Information is encoded in an image signal by exploiting spectral differences between colors that appear the same when rendered. These spectral differences are detected using image sensing that discerns the spectral differences. Spectral difference detection methods include using sensor-synchronized spectrally-structured-light imaging, 3D sensors, imaging spectrophotometers, and higher resolution Bayer pattern capture relative to resolution of patches used to convey a spectral difference signal.

Abstract: In one arrangement, a smartphone camera gathers skin imagery while controlled spectral illumination is emitted from the smartphone display. In a particular embodiment, differently colored bands move across a darkened screen to illuminate the skin from different angles as plural images are being captured. The collection of imagery from different viewing angles, with different spectral illumination, and different illumination angles, can provide imagery (including composite imagery) useful in manual or automated dermoscopic analysis. A great variety of other features and arrangements are also detailed.

Abstract: A system and method determine color of skin of a subject and produce a customized cosmetic based at least in part on the determined color of skin. A region of skin is covered with a chamber having an open area facing the skin. The skin is illuminated with light caused to enter the chamber. The light is caused to be dispersed within the chamber. A camera is used to record an image of a portion of the dispersed light in the chamber and the recorded image is processed to characterize the color of the skin. The recorded image includes a plurality of colors which are mapped to the closest color recipe. The color recipe is used to calculate actuator displacements for a portioning machine that includes a cartridge having cosmetic additives that produce the customized cosmetic.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method of recording an image of an object (103) using an electronic camera (102), one or more light sources (104), and means for light distribution (105), where light emitted from the light sources (104) is distributed to illuminate the object (103), light being reflected to the camera (102). In the light distribution, an integrating cavity (106) is used to whose inner side (107) a light reflecting coating has been applied, and which is provided with first and second openings (109, 110). The camera (102) is placed in alignment with the first opening (109) so that the optical axis of the camera extends through the first and second openings (109, 110). The object (103) is received in the second opening (110), and the interior of the integrating cavity is illuminated using the one or more light sources (104). The invention also relates to an apparatus for performing the method.
