TL;DR: In this paper, a case study with 22 7-and 8-year-old children in a classroom-based study focused on the forms of metalepsis, the purposeful disturbing or breaking of narrative boundaries evident in their writing and artwork.
Abstract: During a multifaceted classroom-based study, 22 7- and 8-year-old children had opportunities to develop their understanding of visual art and design elements and diverse narrative structures in picturebooks. The culminating activity of the case study research involved application and transformation of knowledge of the instructional foci as the students composed their own multimodal print texts. The data reported in this article feature an analysis of the narrative structures in the students’ multimodal compositions, focusing specifically on the forms of metalepsis, the purposeful disturbing or breaking of narrative boundaries, evident in their writing and artwork. Discussions of the relevant theoretical frameworks and literature are followed by descriptions of the research context and methods, and procedures employed for data analysis. Content analysis revealed how the students’ use of nine types of metalepsis in their verbal and/or visual texts resulted in the creation of complex narrative struct...

TL;DR: The authors examines fictions of nuclear waste commissioned by the US Department of Energy to show that a risk-based realism is used to maintain the status quo of settler colonialism, and then turns to a countermodeling of the futures of the nuclear waste by Leslie Marmon Silko in Almanac of the Dead (1991), where uranium's longue duree future, impossible to imagine from a human perspective, recasts the present as a space in which the unlikely, implausible, and unrealistic saturate the everyday.
Abstract: This essay intervenes in current ecocritical debates about the relationship between fiction and environmental risk by analyzing the limits of risk theory in the deep time of the Anthropocene. Although contemporary ecocriticism argues that we must move from apocalyptic depictions of risk to realistic ones, this essay examines fictions of nuclear waste commissioned by the Department of Energy to show that a risk-based realism is used to maintain the status quo of settler colonialism. It then turns to a countermodeling of the futures of nuclear waste by Leslie Marmon Silko in Almanac of the Dead (1991), where uranium’s longue duree future, impossible to imagine from a human perspective, recasts the present as a space in which the unlikely, implausible, and unrealistic saturate the everyday. For Silko, the apocalyptic futurelessness that nuclear waste seeds into our present is a vital formal resource for unsettling colonial realism in the contemporary United States.

TL;DR: In conjunctive hypertext, activities are combined into a whole as opposed to being alternatives, and larger-scale conjunctivity is related to narration issues, gathering, and other issues related to secondary structure.
Abstract: In conjunctive hypertext, activities are combined into a whole as opposed to being alternatives A single localized construct may contain several actemes Their relationship may be ambiguous, they may be peers, may have space relationships or time relationships The conjunction must be actualized, by such devices as co-presentation, delegated presentation, peer traverse, and subscreening An incomplete conjunction contains pending structure which must be indicated Actemes may have generalized boolean relationships Larger-scale conjunctivity is related to narration issues, gathering, and other issues related to secondary structure

TL;DR: The role of time in the narrative of the Mass Effect games has been discussed in this article, where tools derived from narratological approaches to literature are used to describe the temporal ordering of events.
Abstract: This article discusses the role of time in the narrative of the Mass Effect games, employing tools derived from narratological approaches to literature. On the level of the story line, time functions as the engine of the narrative arc by opposing cyclical and linear temporality. On the level of the storyworld, characters and the narrative universe are endowed with a temporal extension into past and present beyond the scope of the main story line, which increases player immersion. On the meta-narrative plane of possible worlds, the player has considerable control not only over the decisions the main character takes but also the order in which events occur—as such, the player oversees an important part of the narrative itself.

TL;DR: This paper raises awareness of alternative structures and simultaneously introduces implementable narrative structures with the aim to expand the design space and range of analytical models for IDN.
Abstract: In narrative game design and related practices, the role and function of narrative models is described as predominantly pragmatic. However, we see that many interactive digital narratives (IDN) including narrative video games derive their story structures from the same formulas connected to Joseph Campbell and Aristotle, adhering to the trajectory of the Hero’s Journey and the dramatic arc. We engage with scholarly criticism exposing the supposed ubiquity of these structures and agree that the question of narrative models in interactive digital media requires both further exploration and intervention. We follow up on some proposed solutions by looking at non-Western narrative traditions to expand the corpus of narrative structures available to game designers and other narrative developers. With this paper we raise awareness of alternative structures and simultaneously introduce implementable narrative structures with the aim to expand the design space and range of analytical models for IDN.
