New Approach of TE/TM Mode Based Rectangular Microstrip Patch Design for Pattern Diversity

Abstract: This work investigates the implementation of TE and TM modes simultaneously in a single microstrip antenna. The proposed design for the first time makes the TE mode survive in a patch by modification of the cavity boundaries producing oblique type radiation. A dual resonant rectangular microstrip patch has been successfully demonstrated to sustain both the TE and TM modes. The design has been experimentally verified using a homemade prototype.

Abstract: A novel cavity-backed probe-fed linearly-polarized microstrip antenna is proposed and implemented. The resulting flush-mounted radiator exhibits symmetrical bandwidth, low cross-polarization - due to its hybrid patch - and low-cost, if built on FR4 material. Substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology is used in the cavity-backed antenna fabrication.
