Abstract: The polarisability and hyperpolarisabilities of some C n H n +2 and C n H n +1 NO 2 molecules are computed by the CHF-PT-EB-CNDO method. The effect of conjugation and charge transfer on these properties is discussed. Furthermore the anisotropy of the considered electric properties and the effect of an applied electric field on the charge transfer is commented upon.

TL;DR: In this paper, the structural, vibrational and second-order nonlinear optical properties of co-crystallized 3-nitroaniline (3-NA: 3-NPh) have been studied under application of the polarized UV-induced field.
Abstract: Single crystals of co-crystallized 3-nitroaniline and 3-nitrophenol (3-NA: 3-NPh) have been grown from saturated solution (pH= 3.26) of the synthesized salt of 3-NA: 3-NPh by the slow evaporation technique at 30°C using a mixture of chloroform and petroleum ether as a solvent. The structural, vibrational and second-order nonlinear optical properties of the crystals were studied under application of the polarized UV-induced field. Besides the ab initio quantum chemical calculations have been performed at HF/6-31G (d) and time dependent DFT method level to derive first order hyperpolarizability. To compare an influence of the crystalline long-range ordering and of the applied effective electric field to the nonlinear optical susceptibilities additional calculations were performed for second order susceptibilities within the FLAPW method. Comparing the values of the second order optical susceptibilities and of the first order hyperpolarizabilites we estimate the role of long-range order intrinsic charged defect states in the observed processes. Moreover, possible increase of the susceptibilities due to applied vectorial fields is discussed. The performed measurements of the effective second harmonic generation for the 1320 nm fundamental wavelength show substantial dependence of the effective second-order susceptibilities versus the applied nitrogen laser field polarized along the z-crystallographic axes. We have also investigated the anisotropic features of the optical second harmonic generation.

TL;DR: In this article, a method of measuring the nonlinear optical properties of molecular compounds is described, which involves measuring the quadratic electro-optical coefficient of a polymer composite containing a variable concentration of the candidate NLO material.
Abstract: A convenient method of measuring the nonlinear optical properties of molecular compounds is described. The method involves measuring the quadratic electro-optical coefficient of a polymer composite containing a variable concentration of the candidate NLO material. The X(3) (ω) value obtained by this low-frequency Kerr measurement, after local-field corrections, can be compared to the nonresonant third-order susceptibility measured by degenerate-four-wave-mixing technique on selective samples. We find that the choice of the polymer matrix dictates the contribution of second-order susceptibility to the Kerr coefficient. Therefore, our method can also be extended to the measurement of second-order susceptibility, analogous to the technique of field-induced second-harmonic-generation.

TL;DR: In this paper, a series of organometallic and organic salts, in which the cation has been designed to have a large molecular hyperpolarizability, has been prepared and the SHG efficiencies were measured.
Abstract: : New approaches to both second-order and third-order nonlinear optical materials are presented. A series of organometallic and organic salts, in which the cation has been designed to have a large molecular hyperpolarizability, has been prepared and the SHG efficiencies were measured. Partially substituted derivatives of polyacetylene are synthesized via the ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of cyclooctatetraene (COT) and its derivatives. Certain polyCOT derivatives afford soluble, highly conjugated polyacetylenes. These materials exhibit large third-order optical nonlinearities and low scattering losses.
