Abstract: Single crystals of ammonium 2,4-dinitrophenolate hydrate (ADH) were grown by the slow evaporation solution growth technique. The structure is elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and the crystal belongs to an orthorhombic system with noncentrosymmetric space group Pna21. The second harmonic generation efficiency of ADH is superior to that of the reference material KH2PO4. The X-ray study reveals that molecules are associated by weak C—H⋯O, O—H⋯N, N—H⋯π and π–π stacking interactions, which are responsible for the formation and strengthening of the supramolecular assembly. Inter- and intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions support the supramol­ecular architecture in the crystal packing. Three different types of architecture, i.e. column-like packing, a sandwich model of packing and a cluster network type of infrastructure, are observed. Optical studies reveal that the absorption is minimum in the visible region and the cutoff wavelength is at ∼240 nm. The band-gap energy was estimated by the application of the Kubelka–Munk algorithm. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern reveals the good crystallinity of the as-grown specimen. Investigation of the intermolecular interactions and crystal packing using Hirshfeld surface analysis, based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction, reveals that the close contacts are associated with molecular interactions. Fingerprint plots of Hirshfeld surfaces were used to locate and analyze the percentage of hydrogen-bonding interactions.

Abstract: In spite of the fact that the first polysilane derivatives were probably prepared in the mid 1920's, there was little scientific interest until recently. The synthesis of the first soluble homo and copolymers about 10 years ago has stimulated an explosive development of this class of materials. This brief review traces the historical development of the polysilanes and focuses on recent studies of polymer structure, electronic properties, photochemical reactions and mechanisms and finally on new applications.

Abstract: We measured the second-order nonlinear optical response of a novel class of tricyanovinylated thiophene compounds using electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation. Very large second-order nonlinearity was observed for these compounds. The results indicate that the combination of the tricyanovinyl acceptor and the thiophene conjugating moiety offers excellent molecular second-order optical nonlinearity.

Abstract: A new organic nonlinear optical single crystal, isonicotinamide bis-paminobenzoic acid (INBAB), is grown from methanol solution using a slow evaporation solution technique. INBAB belongs to a monoclinic system with the space group P21/n. Its relative optical transmittance and optical band gap are found to be 58% and 3.4 eV, respectively. INBAB is thermally stable up to 147°C. The laser-induced surface damage threshold for our crystal is equal to 1.2 GW/cm for the 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser radiation. The nonlinear refractive index, the absorption coefficient and the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of our crystal are determined using a Z-scan technique. The material demonstrates optical-limiting behaviour up to the input irradiance of around 5.63 mW.
