In this paper, the null energy condition is violated in a large class of situations, including isotropic solids and fluids relevant for cosmology, and the existence of superluminal modes is shown to imply the presence of instabilities.Abstract:
We study whether a violation of the null energy condition necessarily implies the presence of instabilities. We prove that this is the case in a large class of situations, including isotropic solids and fluids relevant for cosmology. On the other hand we present several counter-examples of consistent effective field theories possessing a stable background where the null energy condition is violated. Two necessary features of these counter-examples are the lack of isotropy of the background and the presence of superluminal modes. We argue that many of the properties of massive gravity can be understood by associating it to a solid at the edge of violating the null energy condition. We briefly analyze the difficulties of mimicking u H > 0 in scalar tensor theories of gravity.read more

Effective field theory for fluids: Hall viscosity from a Wess-Zumino-Witten term
Michael Geracie,Dam Thanh Son +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, an effective action that describes a relativistic fluid with Hall viscosity was proposed, which involves a Wess-Zumino-Witten term that exists only in (2+1) spacetime dimensions.

Adiabatic media inflation
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the dynamics of inflation driven by an adiabatic self-gravitating medium, extending the previous works on fluid and solid inflation, by using an effective field theory description, and computed the power spectrum for the scalar curvature perturbation of constant energy density hypersurface.

Phantom dark energy with tachyonic instability: metric perturbations
A. V. Serghienko,Valery Rubakov +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the evolution of metric perturbations in a model of UV-stable phantom dark energy was studied, and it was shown that the perturbation grows exponentially in time, starting from very small values determined by vacuum fluctuations, and may become sizeable at late times.

Completing Lorentz violating massive gravity at high energies
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an ultraviolet completion for massive gravitons valid up to a high energy scale independent of the graviton mass, based on the existence of a preferred time foliation combined with spontaneous condensation of vector fields.

TL;DR: For a flat universe with a cosmological constant, the transition between the two epochs is constrained to be at z = 0.46 ± 0.13 as mentioned in this paper, and w = -1.02 ± (and w < -0.76 at the 95% confidence level) for an assumed static equation of state of dark energy.
