Abstract: This is the first complete economic and social history of Brazil in the modern period in any language. It provides a detailed analysis of the evolution of the Brazilian society and economy from the end of the empire in 1889 to the present day. The authors elucidate the basic trends that have defined modern Brazilian society and economy. In this period Brazil moved from being a mostly rural traditional agriculture society with only light industry and low levels of human capital to a modern literate and industrial nation. It has also transformed itself into one of the world's most important agricultural exporters. How and why this occurred is explained in this important survey.

TL;DR: The idea is that it is preferable to foster development autonomously even if it takes longer than to depend indefinitely on foreign capital to spark immediate growth as mentioned in this paper, which is a common sentiment among many leftists.
Abstract: apolitical, and generalized love of country. For leftists, generally, nationalism reflected a sense of injustice at exploitation by foreign economic interests and a servile national elite. This ideological current has unabashedly embraced a central role for the state in steering economic development (in contrast to the dictatorship, for example, which paid lip service to shrinking the government’s place in the market but almost apologetically refused to take active steps in that direction) even at the expense of high short-term growth. The idea is that it is preferable to foster development autonomously even if it takes longer than to depend indefinitely on foreign capital to spark immediate growth. Both approaches have

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explain the dynamics of Brazilian industrial catch-up in the last 60 years by discussing its background institutional conditions as well as its main macroeconomic features, and their solution through the inflationary crisis and institutional inertia of the mid-1960s.
Abstract: This paper seeks to explain the dynamics of Brazilian industrial catch-up in the last 60 years by discussing its background institutional conditions as well as its main macroeconomic features. After a brief introduction, the second section describes how after the institutional innovations introduced during the Vargas’ and Kubitschek’s administrations, a Brazilian version of the Developmental State was created, releasing the growth potential of the economy during the 1950s. The third section analyses the inflationary crisis and institutional inertia of the mid-1960s, and its solution through the
