Abstract: This paper introduces a new approach to database disk buffering, called the LRU-K method The basic idea of LRU-K is to keep track of the times of the last K references to popular database pages, using this information to statistically estimate the interarrival times of references on a page by page basis Although the LRU-K approach performs optimal statistical inference under relatively standard assumptions, it is fairly simple and incurs little bookkeeping overhead As we demonstrate with simulation experiments, the LRU-K algorithm surpasses conventional buffering algorithms in discriminating between frequently and infrequently referenced pages In fact, LRU-K can approach the behavior of buffering algorithms in which page sets with known access frequencies are manually assigned to different buffer pools of specifically tuned sizes Unlike such customized buffering algorithms however, the LRU-K method is self-tuning, and does not rely on external hints about workload characteristics Furthermore, the LRU-K algorithm adapts in real time to changing patterns of access

Abstract: Smart sensors are small wireless computing devices that sense information such as light and humidity at extremely high resolutions. A smart sensor query-processing architecture using database technology can facilitate deployment of sensor networks. Smart-sensor technology enables a broad range of ubiquitous computing applications. Their low cost, small size, and untethered nature lets them sense information at previously unobtainable resolutions. We discuss about query processing in sensor networks.

Abstract: In this paper we present a new algorithm, DBMIN, for managing the buffer pool of a relational database manaegememt system. DBMIN is based on a new model of relational query behavior, the query locality set model (QLSM). Like the hot set model, the QLSM has an advantage over the stochastic models due to its ability to predict future reference hehavior. However, the QLSM avoids the potential problems of the hot set model by separating the modeling of referr-ence bahavior from any particular buffer management algorithm. After introducing the QLSM and describing the DBMIN algorithm, we present a performance evaluation methodology for evaluating buffer manage-ment algorithms in a multiuser environment. This methodology employed a hybrid model that comhines features of both trace driven and distribution driven simulation models. Using this model the performance of the DBMIN algorithm in a multiuser environment is compared with that of the hot set algorithm and four more traditional buffer replacement algorithms.

Abstract: The design of efficient storage hierarchies generally involves the repeated running of "typical" program address traces through a simulated storage system while various hierarchy design parameters are adjusted. This paper describes a new and efficient method of determining, in one pass of an address trace, performance measures for a large class of demand-paged, multilevel storage systems utilizing a variety of mapping schemes and replacement algorithms. The technique depends on an algorithm classification, called "stack algorithms," examples of which are "least frequently used," "least recently used," "optimal," and "random replacement" algorithms. The techniques yield the exact access frequency to each storage device, which can be used to estimate the overall performance of actual storage hierarchies.

Abstract: UNIX is a general-purpose, multi-user, interactive operating system for the Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-11/40 and 11/45 computers. It offers a number of features seldom found even in a larger operating systems, including: (1) a hierarchical file system incorporating demountable volumes; (2) compatible file, device, and inter-process I/O; (3) the ability to initiate asynchronous processes; (4) system command language selectable on a per-user basis; and (5) over 100 subsystems including a dozen languages. This paper discusses the nature and implementation of the file system and of the user command interface.

Abstract: The currently operational (March 1976) version of the INGRES database management system is described. This multiuser system gives a relational view of data, supports two high level nonprocedural data sublanguages, and runs as a collection of user processes on top of the UNIX operating system for Digital Equipment Corporation PDP 11/40, 11/45, and 11/70 computers. Emphasis is on the design decisions and tradeoffs related to (1) structuring the system into processes, (2) embedding one command language in a general purpose programming language, (3) the algorithms implemented to process interactions, (4) the access methods implemented, (5) the concurrency and recovery control currently provided, and (6) the data structures used for system catalogs and the role of the database administrator.Also discussed are (1) support for integrity constraints (which is only partly operational), (2) the not yet supported features concerning views and protection, and (3) future plans concerning the system.

Abstract: Organization and maintenance of an index for a dynamic random access file is considered. It is assumed that the index must be kept on some pseudo random access backup store like a disc or a drum. The index organization described allows retrieval, insertion, and deletion of keys in time proportional to logk I where I is the size of the index and k is a device dependent natural number such that the performance of the scheme becomes near optimal. Storage utilization is at least 50% but generally much higher. The pages of the index are organized in a special data-structure, so-called B-trees. The scheme is analyzed, performance bounds are obtained, and a near optimal k is computed. Experiments have been performed with indices up to 100,000 keys. An index of size 15,000 (100,000) can be maintained with an average of 9 (at least 4) transactions per second on an IBM 360/44 with a 2311 disc.

Abstract: Many operating system designs can be placed into one of two very rough categories, depending upon how they implement and use the notions of process and synchronization. One category, the "Message-oriented System," is characterized by a relatively small, static number of processes with an explicit message system for communicating among them. The other category, the "Procedure-oriented System," is characterized by a large, rapidly changing number of small processes and a process synchronization mechanism based on shared data.In this paper, it is demonstrated that these two categories are duals of each other and that a system which is constructed according to one model has a direct counterpart in the other. The principal conclusion is that neither model is inherently preferable, and the main consideration for choosing between them is the nature of the machine architecture upon which the system is being built, not the application which the system will ultimately support.
