Abstract: This paper presents a concise, although admittedly non-exhaustive, didactic review of some of the main concepts and approaches related to the use of molecularly modified metal nanoparticles in or as chemical sensors. This paper attempts to pull together different views and terminologies used in sensors based on molecularly modified metal nanoparticles, including those established upon electrochemical, optical, surface Plasmon resonance, piezoelectric and electrical transduction approaches. Finally, this paper discusses briefly the main advantages and disadvantages of each of the presented class of sensors.

Abstract: An optical evaluation technique is described that is suitable for determining the positions and magnitudes of reflection sites within miniature optical assemblies. This method utilizes the coherence effects exhibited by a broadband optical source and is referred to as optical coherence-domain reflectometry. Background theory is given, and experimental results have demonstrated a resolution of 10 μm with an optical dynamic range of more than 100 dB.

TL;DR: The calorimetric method that was developed for measuring a low absorption coefficient in PTR glass and VBGs is based on transmission monitoring of the intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer produced by the plane-parallel surfaces of the measured optical elements when heated by high-power laser radiation.
Abstract: Volume Bragg gratings (VBGs) in photothermorefractive (PTR) glass are widely used for laser beam control including high-power laser systems. Among them, spectral beam combining based on VBGs is one of the most promising. Achieving 100+ kW of combined laser beams requires the development of PTR glass and VBGs with an extremely low absorption coefficient and therefore methods of its measurement. This paper describes the calorimetric method that was developed for measuring a low absorption coefficient in PTR glass and VBGs. It is based on transmission monitoring of the intrinsic Fabry–Perot interferometer produced by the plane-parallel surfaces of the measured optical elements when heated by high-power laser radiation. An absorption coefficient at 1085 nm as low as 5×10−5 cm−1 is demonstrated in pristine PTR glass while an absorption coefficient as low as 1×10−4 cm−1 is measured in high-efficiency reflecting Bragg gratings with highest purity. The actual level of absorption in PTR glass allows laser beam control at the 10 kW level, while the 100 kW level would require active cooling and/or decreasing the absorption in PTR Bragg gratings to a value similar to that in virgin PTR glass.

Abstract: The rigorous expression for the transmission of a thin absorbing film on a transparent substrate is manipulated to yield formulae in closed form for the refractive index and absorption coefficient. A procedure is presented to calculate the thickness to an accuracy of better than 1% with similar accuracies in the values of n. A method to correct for errors due to slit width is also given. Various formulae to calculate the absorption coefficient accurately over almost three orders of magnitude are discussed. Only data from the transmission spectrum are used and the procedure is simple, fast and very accurate. All formulae are in closed form and can be used on a programmable pocket calculator.

Abstract: In this article we present a detailed discussion of noise sources in Fourier Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (FDOCT) setups. The performance of FDOCT with charge coupled device (CCD) cameras is compared to current standard time domain OCT systems. We describe how to measure sensitivity in the case of FDOCT and confirm the theoretically obtained values. It is shown that FDOCT systems have a large sensitivity advantage and allow for sensitivities well above 80dB, even in situations with low light levels and high speed detection.
