TLDR
Models are proposed that show how organizations can be designed to meet the information needs of technology, interdepartmental relations, and the environment to both reduce uncertainty and resolve equivocality.Abstract:
This paper answers the question, "Why do organizations process information?" Uncertainty and equivocality are defined as two forces that influence information processing in organizations. Organization structure and internal systems determine both the amount and richness of information provided to managers. Models are proposed that show how organizations can be designed to meet the information needs of technology, interdepartmental relations, and the environment. One implication for managers is that a major problem is lack of clarity, not lack of data. The models indicate how organizations can be designed to provide information mechanisms to both reduce uncertainty and resolve equivocality.read more

Managing potential and realized absorptive capacity: how do organizational antecedents matter?
TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore how organizational antecedents affect potential and realized absorptive capacity and find that organizational mechanisms associated with coordination capabilities (cross-functional interfaces, participation in decision making, and job rotation) primarily enhance a unit's potential absorptive capacities.

Decision Making in Action: Models and Methods
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present and elaborate on past models developed to explain this type of decision making and present a new perspective of naturalistic decision making, which they argue is unproductive since it is so heavily grounded in economics and mathematics.

Building an Information System Design Theory for Vigilant EIS
TL;DR: This paper contends that the underlying theoretical basis of EIS can be addressed through a design theory of vigilant information systems, and research on managerial information scanning and emerging issue tracking as well as theories of open loop control are synthesized to generate vigilant information system design theory propositions.

Specialized supplier networks as a source of competitive advantage : Evidence from the auto industry
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the relationship between interfirm asset specificity and performance in the auto industry and found a positive relationship between human asset cospecialization and both quality and new model cycle time.

Overcoming Local Search Through Alliances and Mobility
Lori Rosenkopf,Paul Almeida +1 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that two mechanisms--alliances and the mobility of inventors--can serve as bridges to distant contexts and, thus, enable firms to overcome the constraints of contextually localized search.

The External Control of Organizations: A Resource Dependence Perspective
TL;DR: The External Control of Organizations as discussed by the authors explores how external constraints affect organizations and provides insights for designing and managing organizations to mitigate these constraints, and it is the fact of the organization's dependence on the environment that makes the external constraint and control of organizational behavior both possible and almost inevitable.

A Behavioral Theory of the Firm
Richard M. Cyert,James G. March +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an overview of basic concepts in the Behavioral Theory of the Firm, and present a specific price and output model for a specific type of products. But they do not discuss the relationship between the two concepts.
