TLDR
The lowest tensions were found in synovial fluids from patients with rheumatoid arthritis, in some cases it was found to be as low as O mmHg, and significant correlation was found between pO2 and pH, and between p O2 and pCO2.
Abstract
The results of a study on the oxygen tension in 103 synovial fluids from knee joints are presented. The lowest tensions were found in synovial fluids from patients with rheumatoid arthritis. In some cases it was found to be as low as O mmHg. The oxygen tension in synovial fluids from patients with osteoarthrosis and from those with traumatic joint exudates was considerably higher. The pH and pCO2 were measured in all the cases. Significant correlation was found between pO2 and pH, and between pO2 and pCO2.

Hypoxia and Adipose Tissue Function and Dysfunction in Obesity

TL;DR: Overall, hypoxia has pervasive effects on the function of adipocytes and appears to be a key factor in adipose tissue dysfunction in obesity.

Chondrocyte apoptosis induced by nitric oxide.

TL;DR: In this paper, the role of NO and IL-1 in the induction of chondrocyte cell death was analyzed, and it was shown that NO alone is not the primary inducer of cell death.

Oxidation in rheumatoid arthritis

TL;DR: Repetitive cycles of hypoxia and reoxygenation associated with changes in synovial perfusion are postulated to activate Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α and nuclear factor-κB, two key transcription factors that are regulated by changes in cellular oxygenation and cytokine stimulation, and that orchestrate the expression of a spectrum of genes critical to the persistence of synovitis.

Angiogenesis in rheumatoid arthritis

TL;DR: Although no clinical trials of anti-angiogenic therapy in RA have been reported to date, the blockade of angiogenesis – and especially of VEGF – appears to be a promising avenue for the future treatment of RA.

Peripheral vascular obstruction in rheumatoid arthritis and its relationship to other vascular lesions.

TL;DR: Clinical and pathological changes occurring in the course of rheumatoid arthritis are described and the relationship of these changes to those found in generalized lupus erythematosus is discussed, to the better-defined entities listed briefly above, and to the rarer ill-defined group of published cases not easily accommodated within these diagnostic pigeonholes.
