Abstract
&NA; Sixteen randomly selected patients, fulfilling the American Rheumatism Association criteria for definite or classic rheumatoid arthritis, were involved in a longitudinal psychosomatic study during their stay on a rheumatic diseases unit. After initial rheumatologic and psychiatric evaluation, twice daily mood and pain ratings were conducted by a single observer employing a mood adjective check list and a dolorimeter for measuring all upper limb peripheral joint tenderness. Twenty‐one separate studies, each averaging 36 days, were carried out; 3 patients were studied on at least one other occasion. Two pain‐mood patterns emerged: a synchronous state, characterized by mood changes within an anxiety or hostility spectrum, either closely preceding or concomitant with fluctuations in joint tenderness; and a paradoxical state, characterized by an inverse relationship between intensity of joint tenderness and a sense of hopelessness. The patients' age, sex, social class, duration of illness, radiologic joint changes, functional disability and medication bore no relationship to these patterns. In a 1‐2 year follow‐up of the 2 groups of 8 patients each, the paradoxical group predictably demonstrated a less favorable outcome.

Induction of neurasthenic musculoskeletal pain syndrome by selective sleep stage deprivation.

TL;DR: The stage 4 deprived group reported more musculoskeletal symptoms during the deprivation condition than did the REM deprived group and showed a significant increase in muscle tenderness between the baseline and deprivation conditions and an altered pattern of overnight change in Muscle tenderness in response to deprivation.

Sequential daily relations of sleep, pain intensity, and attention to pain among women with fibromyalgia.

TL;DR: There was a significant bi‐directional within‐person association between pain attention and sleep quality that was not explained by changes in pain intensity, and a night of poorer sleep was followed by a significantly more painful day.

The description and analysis of mood

TL;DR: There is some question in the minds as to whether the appearance of the only 1 of the 8 papers that deals exclusively with human subjects was planned as a climax or as an anticlimax, and if there must always be an inverse relationship between the magnitude and importance of a problem in behavioral science and the adequacy of the methodology by means of which it can be attacked.
