Abstract: The ergonomic approach to performance evaluation in orthopaedic rehabilitation presents problems because of the cumbersome and time-consuming measurement and test procedures involved. This paper describes a method of performance evaluation through graded load carrying tests which makes it possible to set up regression equations which can be used in routine clinical practice for prediction of the performance of below-knee amputees.

Abstract: The existing locomotion evaluation techniques are based either on bioenergetic measurements or on biomechanical principles and procedures. While the former basis has been preferred by a few, published literature in this field has contained more information on the latter. No significant work combining both the approaches in a single measurement system is known so far. This paper reports an investigation where an attempt was made to combine both the techniques in relation to a mixed handicapped population composed of 10 test subjects as well as a matching control group. It has been found from the present investigation that the combined application of the above two types of measurements might lead to more useful information about the performance level of the subjects in locomotion. Further, the statistical analysis of the experimental data revealed the existance of a linear correlationship among the parameters used for such performance evaluation. Finally, the study findings have been discussed to indicate how the biomechanical measurements alone can throw sufficient light on the subject's locomotor status.

Abstract: A study was undertaken to evaluate the performance of an amputee-prosthesis system in a group of ten below-knee amputees fitted with patellar tendon-bearing prostheses. The subjects had fulfilled the necessary clinical and prosthetic criteria for their discharge from the care of the Rehabilitation Centre to resume their domestic and occupational activities. Pulmonary ventilation, oxygen consumption, energy expenditure and peak heart rate were measured during the rehabilitees' performance of four types of standard physical activities and one standard exercise tolerance test. Similar data were collected from a group of sixteen normal subjects while performing the same series of tests. Statistical tests for difference between the two groups of subjects showed significant differences in the above parameters for the walking on the level and stair climbing activities. Abstract: A below-knee amputee is generally known to achieve a close-to-normal performance level, with the patellar-tendon-bearing method of stump fitting. This was confirmed by an ergonomic investigation on ten below-knee amputees, fitted with PTB prostheses. The test group subjects were given two static tests, two dynamic tests and one exercise tolerance test, during which their oxygen consumptions, pulmonary ventilations, energy expenditures and peak heart rates were measured. The performance of the test subjects were compared with that of a control group consisting of sixteen normal, healthy, individuals. The percentage increases in the values of the biomechanical parameters of the test subjects, over those of the control group, were found to be justified and thus natural to the below-knee amputee-PTB prosthesis system. The ergonomic study has not yielded information regarding the biomechanical efficacy of the PTB prosthesis, but it has also shown that the amputees fitted with such prostheses can take up, without any undue extra effort and metabolic cost, industrial occupations of the moderately heavy kind.
