In this paper, a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) is presented.
Abstract
Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Directed Evolution of a Cytochrome P450 Monooxygenase for Alkane Oxidation

TL;DR: It is shown that P450 BM-3 oxidizes octane, which is four carbons shorter and lacks the carboxylate function- ality of the shortest fatty acid, in an effort to explore the plasticity and mechanisms of substrate recognition in this powerful biocatalyst.

Unbiased cut selection for optimal upper limits in neutrino detectors: the model rejection potential technique

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method for optimising experimental cuts in order to place the strongest constraints (upper limits) on theoretical signal models, which relies only on signal and background expectations derived from Monte Carlo simulations, so no bias is introduced by looking at actual data.

Two-loop SUSY corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors calculate supersymmetric two-loop corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, consisting of diagrams with a closed scalar fermion or fermions loop and gauge and/or Higgs boson exchange, and discuss the numerical impact of each subclass of diagrams and determine the leading contributions.

Blowup for nonlinear wave equations describing boson stars

TL;DR: For spherically symmetric initial data, with negative energy, this paper proved blowup of u(t, x) in the H1/2-norm within a finite time.

Loss tolerance in one-way quantum computation via counterfactual error correction.

TL;DR: A scheme for fault tolerantly dealing with losses in cluster state computation that can tolerate up to 50% qubit loss is introduced, achieved passively using an adaptive strategy of measurement--no coherent measurements or coherent correction is required.

A review of the features and analyses of the solid electrolyte interphase in Li-ion batteries

TL;DR: The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a protecting layer formed on the negative electrode of Li-ion batteries as a result of electrolyte decomposition, mainly during the first cycle as discussed by the authors.
