PMBLDC motor drive with Power Factor correction controller

Abstract: This paper presents a boost converter configuration, control scheme and design of single phase power factor controller for permanent magnet brushless DC motor (PMBLDCM) drive. PMBLDC motors are the latest choice of researchers, due to the high efficiency, silent operation, compact size, high reliability, and low maintenance requirements. The proposed Power Factor Controller topology improves power quality by improving performance of PMBLDCM drive, such as reduction of AC main current harmonics, near unity power factor. PFC converter forces the drive to draw sinusoidal supply current in phase with supply voltage. It uses a boost converter to obtain unity power factor with improved performance. The system includes a speed controller for PMBLDC drive and a voltage controller for boost converter‥The voltage or speed controllers can be realized using proportional integral (PI) controller. Simulations are done using MATLAB/ SIMULINK software.

Abstract: This study deals with the design and development of a power factor (PF) correction-based modified-zeta converter fed brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive. A single-phase supply followed by a diode bridge rectifier and a modified-zeta converter operating in discontinuous inductor current mode (DICM) is used to feed a voltage source inverter (VSI) driving a BLDC motor. The modified-zeta converter operating in DICM acts as an inherent PF pre-regulator. A single-voltage sensor is used for the DC-link voltage control, which is used to control the speed of the BLDC motor. This facilitates the operation of VSI in fundamental frequency switching for reducing the switching losses in VSI. The proposed BLDC motor drive is designed and its performance is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink environment for achieving an improved power quality at AC mains for wide range of speed control. The obtained power quality indices are under the recommended limits of international power quality standard IEC 61000-3-2. Finally, the performance of the proposed drive is validated with test results obtained on a developed prototype of the proposed BLDC motor drive.

Abstract: This paper presents a PFC (Power Factor Correction) based BL-Luo (Bridgeless-Luo) converter fed BLDC (Brushless DC) motor drive. A single voltage sensor is used for the speed control of BLDC motor and PFC at AC mains. The voltage follower control is used for a BL-Luo converter operating in DICM (Discontinuous Inductor Current Mode). The speed of the BLDC motor is controlled by an approach of variable DC link voltage, which allows a low frequency switching of VSI (Voltage Source Inverter) for electronic commutation of BLDC motor; thus offers reduced switching losses. The proposed BLDC motor drive is designed to operate over a wide range of speed control with improved power quality at AC mains. The power quality indices thus obtained are under the recommended limits of IEC 61000-3-2. The performance of the proposed drive is validated with test results obtained on a developed prototype of the drive.

Abstract: This paper presents the analysis, design and comparison of performance of a scheme for power factor correction for the brushless dc motor drive. A front end diode bridge rectifier (DBR) with dc link capacitor at the input side of brushless dc motor (BLDC) draws peaky current which then leads to high value of Total Harmonics Distortion (THD) and poor power factor. This problem can be eliminated by connecting a diode bridge rectifier together with dc- dc converter for improving power factor. A variable dc link voltage output from the converter with constant switching frequency based voltage source inverter reduces switching losses. This paper compares the performance of different types of front end converters for Brushless dc motor drive based on its THD and power factor correction. A Power factor corrected (PFC) bridgeless buck-boost converter operating in discontinuous mode of inductor current improves the power factor of ac mains. The performance of the proposed drive is evaluated over a wide range of speeds.

Abstract: A bridgeless power factor-corrected (PFC) converter-fed BLDC motor is modeled and designed for an air conditioning system (ACS). Bridgeless configuration eliminates the requirement of diode bridge at the input side. By this arrangement, overall losses and the total number of conducting devices used in one switching cycle are reduced. The performance of air conditioning system is validated through analysis, design and simulation.

Abstract: The algorithms for adaptive canceling of selected harmonic components have been well developed in digital signal processing. In those applications, "filtering" is a primary objective. However, in power electronic applications control, with objectives like fast response of system on reference and disturbance change, is of primary importance. This paper provides a novel and a systematic design approach for applying signal processing methods (like modified adaptive selective harmonic elimination algorithms) as an addition to conventional control. Thus, both control objectives like fast transient response and efficient harmonic (disturbance) filtering are achieved. The filtering algorithm does not interfere and has minimal impact on the stability of the primary control loop. Its sole function is to eliminate undesirable higher harmonic components from selected variable (current or voltage) and it requires only knowledge of the frequency of the component to be eliminated. The methodology is applicable for a wide range of equipment like uninterrupted power systems, regenerative converters, active power filters, etc. The application of the proposed method in a regenerative voltage source converter for dead time compensation is used as an example for illustrating its effectiveness and design procedure

Abstract: Permanent magnet brushless DC (PMBLDC) motors are the latest choice of researchers due to their high efficiency, silent operation, compact size, high reliability and low maintenance requirements. These motors are preferred for numerous applications; however, most of them require sensorless control of these motors. The operation of PMBLDC motors requires rotor-position sensing for controlling the winding currents. The sensorless control would need estimation of rotor position from the voltage and current signals, which are easily sensed. This paper presents state of the art PMBLDC motor drives with an emphasis on sensorless control of these motors.

Abstract: This study presents various configurations, control schemes and design of single-phase power factor controller (PFC) topologies for permanent magnet brushless DC motor (PMBLDCM) drives and provides a basis for selection of a suitable PFC topology for a specific application. Several AC-DC converter (buck, boost, buck-boost, C-uk, SEPIC, Zeta, push-pull, half bridge, full bridge) based PFC topologies are designed, modelled and applied to a 1.5-kW PMBLDCM drive for comparison of performance. Some of bidirectional bridge converter and unipolar inverter topologies are also evaluated to provide a comprehensive comparison of the PFC topologies for PMBLDCM drives. The proposed PFC converter topologies show conformity to international power quality standards with improved performance of PMBLDCM drive, such as reduction of AC mains current harmonics, near unity power factor and reduction of speed and torque ripples. A classified list of more than 200 research publications on the state of art of various PFC topologies and PMBLDCM drives is also given for a quick reference.
