Abstract: The article aims to develop an empirical approach to identifying the key factors in the political elite behavior effectiveness in combating the COVID-19 pandemic propagation exemplified by Vietnam. Using regression analysis and the Chow test, we identified the key behavioral factors that affect the effectiveness of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of mortality rates and the state of the economy. The study sample was formed by data from 67 countries worldwide for 2020. The results suggest that the Rule of Law significantly influences the state of the economy in a pandemic. Their impact on economic efficiency does not depend on the world leaders' gender. The COVID-19 mortality rate is also significantly affected by the Global Health Security Index, gender, and cultural factors. Based on the constructed linear multivariate regression models, we calculated the contribution of significant factors to the effectiveness of combating the pandemic in Vietnam, their stimulating and de-stimulating effects compared to the average values of these indicators for the sample countries. © 2021, Institute of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. TL;DR: The authors provides a short overview of how the China-Russia relationship developed, where it is at now, how it could be harmed, and how a stronger trade relationship with the U.S. and rest of the world could subvert those fears.
Abstract: Over the years, bilateral trade between China and Russia experience many turbulences but in recent years has grown rapidly. Their relationship has evolved in such a way that they have come to rely on each other. The reason why Russian-Chinese relationship improved is because of U.S. and EU economic sanctions due to Russian invasion of Crimea and military attacks of Eastern Ukrainian territory. Russia needs China for funding and infrastructure development, and China needs Russia to feed its large energy needs. China and Russia have a strong trade partnership that extends into many different sectors throughout each country. While deep mistrust exists between both sides, China and Russia have proud cultures that desire to be viewed as global powers and believe their relationship with each other will advance that objective. Further, both countries view the West as a hindrance to their overall trade goals, and this marriage of convenience strengthens their position in global affairs which could result in far reaching implications for the world. This paper provides a short overview of how the China-Russia relationship developed, where it is at now, how it could be harmed, and how a stronger trade relationship with the U.S. and rest of the world could subvert those fears. It will also provide recommendations based on a solid foundational understanding of global trade and management.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors argue that the Vietnamese government, which is categorized as authoritarian, effectively managed the COVID-19 pandemic, at least until 2021, by utilizing vertical and horizontal political systems, networks, and social media platforms; increasing accountability and transparency through risk communication and providing scientifically credible information; and mobilizing organizations affiliated with the Communist Party of Vietnam and its diverse stakeholders.
Abstract: ABSTRACT The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has given rise to dichotomous debates in international politics on whether authoritarian or democratic governance is more effective in responding to the pandemic. This study argues that the Vietnamese government, which is categorized as authoritarian, effectively managed the COVID-19 pandemic, at least until 2021, by utilizing vertical and horizontal political systems, networks, and social media platforms; increasing accountability and transparency through risk communication and providing scientifically credible information; and mobilizing organizations affiliated with the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and its diverse stakeholders. In the process, these social attempts have provided more room for citizens to participate in combating this pandemic that has resulted in a change in state–society relations. However, this change might not continue in reforming daily life.

Abstract: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is affecting social and economic life worldwide. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current status of COVID-19 in Saudi Arabia. National data regarding SARS-CoV-2 infections in Saudi Arabia were obtained from the World Health Organization, the Saudi Ministry of Health, and Our World in Data as of June 13, 2020. The stimulus package data were obtained from the International Monetary Fund. The data were then analyzed to paint the current scenario of COVID-19 in Saudi Arabia. The initial case of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Saudi Arabia was detected on March 2, 2020. Epidemiological data indicate that by August 15, 2020, there were a total of 258,156 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 2,601 deaths. The case fatality rate decreased significantly to 0.74% on June 13, compared to 1.51% on April 7, 2020. The tests per thousand people increased to 0.66. The study suggests that importation of SARS-CoV-2 infection was effectively handled by the government, with stringent lockdown and significant support for employees and local businesses through stimulus packages.

TL;DR: Evidence from a selection of research topics relevant to pandemics is discussed, including work on navigating threats, social and cultural influences on behaviour, science communication, moral decision-making, leadership, and stress and coping.
Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic represents a massive global health crisis. Because the crisis requires large-scale behaviour change and places significant psychological burdens on individuals, insights from the social and behavioural sciences can be used to help align human behaviour with the recommendations of epidemiologists and public health experts. Here we discuss evidence from a selection of research topics relevant to pandemics, including work on navigating threats, social and cultural influences on behaviour, science communication, moral decision-making, leadership, and stress and coping. In each section, we note the nature and quality of prior research, including uncertainty and unsettled issues. We identify several insights for effective response to the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight important gaps researchers should move quickly to fill in the coming weeks and months.

TL;DR: This new database brings together official data on the extent of PCR testing over time for 94 countries and aims to facilitate the incorporation of this crucial information into epidemiological studies, as well as track a key component of countries’ responses to COVID-19.
Abstract: Our understanding of the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic is built upon data concerning confirmed cases and deaths. This data, however, can only be meaningfully interpreted alongside an accurate understanding of the extent of virus testing in different countries. This new database brings together official data on the extent of PCR testing over time for 94 countries. We provide a time series for the daily number of tests performed, or people tested, together with metadata describing data quality and comparability issues needed for the interpretation of the time series. The database is updated regularly through a combination of automated scraping and manual collection and verification, and is entirely replicable, with sources provided for each observation. In providing accessible cross-country data on testing output, it aims to facilitate the incorporation of this crucial information into epidemiological studies, as well as track a key component of countries' responses to COVID-19.

TL;DR: An overview of the policy responses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (the DACH region) during the early stages of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic provides the context for a comparative policy analysis, and indicates that certain policies related to economic resilience and health system capacity cannot yet be fully evaluated.
Abstract: Objectives This paper presents an overview of the policy responses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (the DACH region) during the early stages of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic (Feb.-June 2020), which provides the context for a comparative policy analysis. This analysis provides insight into the possible implications of the policy actions taken in the region. Methods An in-depth review and analysis of available data from the DACH countries was conducted. Data was collected from official government sources whenever possible, and supplemented by information from international databases and local reports. The data was then analyzed to identify common patterns as well as significant divergences across the DACH region, especially in the area of health policy and technology use. Results The DACH countries faced similar epidemiological situations during the Covid-19 pandemic, and were largely successful at preventing many of the negative impacts seen across the rest of Europe. Although many differences in health systems and governance structures existed, the policy responses in all three countries managed to address some of the most important factors in containing an infectious disease outbreak of this magnitude. Conclusions The actions taken by all three DACH countries appear to have been largely successful in reducing the health impact of Covid-19, allowing a return to normal economic activities much earlier than in neighboring countries. However, the implications of certain policies related to economic resilience and health system capacity cannot yet be fully evaluated and may even prove to have negative impacts into the future.

TL;DR: The COVID-19 pandemic has undermined the division between the private sphere of the home and the public sphere of politics that has traditionally disadvantaged women political leaders, and women leaders are now able to draw on their traditional motherly role to display forms of feminine protectionism.
Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has undermined the division between the private sphere of the home and the public sphere of politics that has traditionally disadvantaged women political leaders. Whereas male political leaders historically drew on their traditional role as the male head of household to display forms of masculine protectionism toward citizens, women leaders are now able to draw on their traditional motherly role—for example, as the member of the household who traditionally cares for the sick—to display forms of feminine protectionism. As a result, international women leaders have managed to leverage women's role in the home to their advantage in the political sphere. Significantly, an appreciation of traditionally feminine attributes in women political leaders has been displayed in much media coverage, providing more favorable coverage of female political leaders than was previously the case.
