TL;DR: Recent developments in the field of synthesis and potential applications of metal-functionalized polymers obtained via electropolymerization are presented, highlighting the significant advances in this field of research.
Abstract: Electropolymerization represents a suitable and well-established approach for the assembly of polymer structures, in particular with regard to the formation of thin, insoluble films. Utilization of monomers that are functionalized with metal complex units allows the combination of structural and functional benefits of polymers and metal moieties. Since a broad range of both electropolymerizable monomers and metal complexes are available, various structures and, thus, applications are possible. Recent developments in the field of synthesis and potential applications of metal-functionalized polymers obtained via electropolymerization are presented, highlighting the significant advances in this field of research.

TL;DR: Sequential polymerization of supramolecular metallorotaxane complexes results in three-stranded conducting ladder polymers that can be mediated by the Cu(1+)/Cu(2+) redox couple.
Abstract: Sequential polymerization of supramolecular metallorotaxane complexes results in three-stranded conducting ladder polymers. The internal polymer is "sandwiched" between the other two polymers to give molecular wires that are effectively insulated when the outer polymers are in their nonconducting state (shown schematically). The intermolecular conductivity can be mediated by the Cu(1+)/Cu(2+) redox couple.

TL;DR: In this paper, a solution-cast poly(2,5-dialkoxy-p-phenyleneethynylene) molecules, I-IV, with varying backbone chain lengths and varying alkoxy substituent chain lengths, and an alternating copolymer of 1,4-diethynyl-2.5-dihexadecyloxybenzene and 9,10-dibromoanthracene V, have been characterized electrochemically and by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
Abstract: Solution-cast films of four different poly(2,5-dialkoxy-p-phenyleneethynylene) molecules, I-IV, with varying backbone chain lengths and varying alkoxy substituent chain lengths, and an alternating copolymer of 1,4-diethynyl-2,5-dihexadecyloxybenzene and 9,10-dibromoanthracene V, have been characterized electrochemically and by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). XRD and DSC show that the polymers have varying degrees of order and crystallinity based on long-range lamellar structure. Cyclic voltammetry in liquid SO{sub 2}/electrolyte shows that the onset of oxidation for I-IV occurs at {approximately}1.05 V vs SCE with the more crystallinity polymers having slower electrochemical response than the less crystalline ones. In situ characterization of the potential dependence of conductivity in the same medium shows that the maximum conductivities is associated with lower long-range order in the polymer films but showing little dependence on average polymer chain length. I-IV all have maximum conductivity at {approximately}1.6 V vs SCE and finite potential windows of high conductivity {approximately}0.55 V wide, indicating that the potential of maximum conductivity and the width of the window of high conductivity are determined by molecular rather than bulk properties. For V, the onset of oxidation occurs at {approximately}0.8 V vs SCE, the potential of maximum conductivity is {approximately}1.5 V vs SCE, and themore » width of the potential window of high conductivity is {approximately}0.85 V. 35 refs., 9 figs., 1 tab.« less

TL;DR: In this article, the authors synthesize 1,1'-bis(2-thienyl)ferrocene (1) with 2-bromothiophene and 5'bromo-2,2'bithiophene, respectively.
Abstract: The new complexes 1,1‘-bis(5-(2,2‘-bithienyl))ferrocene (2) and 1,1‘-bis(5-(2,2‘:5‘,2‘ ‘-terthienyl))ferrocene (3) have been synthesized by coupling 1,1‘-bis(2-thienyl)ferrocene (1) with 2-bromothiophene and 5-bromo-2,2‘-bithiophene, respectively. The cyclic voltammograms of 1−3 contain a reversible FeII/III wave with E1/2 between 0.37 and 0.46 V vs SCE and irreversible thiophene-based oxidation waves at higher potentials. These compounds can be electrochemically oxidized to yield solutions of the monocations 1+−3+. The visible−near-IR spectra of these monocations all contain low-energy bands due to an oligothienyl group to FeIII charge-transfer transition. The absorption maxima and intensities of these bands correlate to the length of the conjugation in the oligothienyl group. Above the thiophene oxidation potential and by careful exclusion of water, 2 and 3 electropolymerize resulting in the deposition of electrochromic films on the electrode surface. The films are golden-red and stable when neutral and...
