Pragmatism and Radical Democracy

Abstract: This paper suggests that pragmatism makes a distinctive contribution to the theory and practice of radical democracy. It investigates the relation ship between the renewal of interest in pragmatism and the recent attempts to develop radical democratic alternatives to political liberalism. With particular reference to the contemporary critical social theory of Habermas and Honneth, the paper outlines key dimensions of the civic republican, deliberative democratic and reflexive cooperative reconstructions of John Dewey's conception of democracy. These reconstructions are shown to have explicated important pragmatist insights concerning public participation in civic associations, the discursive practices of deliberation, and the cooperative organization of the division of labour. Abstract: Cette these etudie la maniere dont les institutions utilisent les procedures numeriques dans leur application des processus participatifs, afin d'analyser comment cette utilisation peut resoudre certains des problemes lies a la democratie participative que nous nommerons « traditionnelle ». L'exemple du Budget Participatif de Paris, notamment, rend possible la mise en valeur d'une nouvelle maniere de concevoir la citoyennete (qui insiste sur le role direct du citoyen dans les procedures de prise de decision, voire meme qui lui permet de prendre des decisions de maniere autonome), la representation (par une representation casuelle et ponctuelle) et la deliberation (qui motive le questionnement des phenomenes d'agregation dans les processus de prise de decision collective et l'etude de la valeur attribuee a de tels phenomenes). Ce travail cherche a ouvrir la voie, d'une maniere reflexive, a un eventail d'opportunites qui seraient permises par l'utilisation des outils numeriques dans le contexte de la perception, par nature evolutive, des problemes de la democratie.

Abstract: In a preferred embodiment an apex seal for a rotary combustion engine is disclosed having a hollow, thin wall, tubular, metal core member embedded in an extruded composite metal-carbon matrix. The seal is adapted to slidably engage the slot of the rotor in which it rides, and to sealingly engage the rotor housing against which it is spring and gas pressure biased. The incorporation of the hollow tubular core in the extruded seal permits a reduction in weight with no significant loss in flexural strength or wear resistance. It also provides gas pressure balance, end to end.
