Preemptive mobile assisted and guard channel based handoff queuing scheme

Abstract: Mobility is an important aspect of any time, any where next generation wireless communication networks. Handoff supports this mobility of the users and allows them to move from one cell to another without service interruption or degradation and in true sense makes a user mobile. Handoff failure results in forced termination of an ongoing call so the handoff requests need to be prioritized over originating call requests. This paper discusses a preemptive scheme which uses channel reservation for handoff requests as well as allows ongoing non-real time calls to be preempted by real-time handoff calls arriving in the network. Handoff decisions are assumed to be Mobile-Assisted and hence calls are handed over to Base stations with good-quality signals. Markov chain model of the proposed scheme has been designed and dropping and blocking probabilities of the calls arriving at the network have been computed.

Abstract: As mobile wireless networks increase in popularity and pervasiveness, we are faced with the challenge of combining a diverse number of wireless networks. The fourth generation of wireless communications is expected to integrate a potentially large number of heterogeneous wireless technologies in what could be considered a huge step forward toward universal seamless access. One of the main challenges for seamless mobility is the availability of reliable horizontal (intrasystem) and vertical (intersystem) handoff schemes. Efficient handoff schemes enhance quality of service and provide flawless mobility. This article presents different and novel aspects of handoff and discusses handoff related issues of fourth generation systems. Desirable handoff features are presented. Handoff decisions, radio link transfer, and channel assignment are described as stages of the complete handoff process. A vertical handoff decision function, which enables devices to assign weights to different network parameters, is also presented

Abstract: We propose and evaluate new schemes for channel reservation motivated by the rapidly evolving technology of mobile positioning. The schemes, called predictive channel reservation (PCR), work by sending reservation requests to neighboring cells based on extrapolating the motion of mobile stations (MSs). A number of design enhancements are incorporated to minimize the effect of false reservations and to improve the throughput of the cellular system. These enhancements include: (1) reservation pooling; (2) queuing of reservation requests; (3) hybrid approach for integrating guard channels (GCs); and (4) using a threshold distance (TD) to control the timing of reservation requests. The design enhancements have produced a set of highly efficient schemes that achieve significant reduction in handoff blocking rates while only incurring remarkably small increases in the new call blocking rates. The PCR approach has also been used to solve the MINBLOCK optimization problem and has given significant improvement over the fractional guard channel (FGC) protocol. Detailed performance results of the different variations of the PCR scheme and comparisons with conventional channel reservation schemes are presented. An analytical Markov model for the hybrid predictive version of the scheme is developed and its applicability and numerical results are discussed.

Abstract: Handoff is a key element in wireless cellular networks in order to provide quality of service (QoS) to the users and to support users' mobility. Handoff failure will result in the forced termination of an ongoing call. From the user's point of view, the service of a handoff request is more important, as the forced termination of an ongoing call is more annoying than the blocking of new calls. Therefore, in order to support QoS to the users and to provide ubiquitous coverage, the handoff procedure ought to be further investigated. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of the basic elements, the different types and phases of the handoff procedure. Moreover, particular interest has been given in the horizontal handoff execution phase by discussing and classifying the most recent handoff prioritization schemes into categories based on the concepts that these schemes adopt, e.g. channel reservation, handoff queueing, channel transferred, subrating, genetic and hybrid schemes and in the vertical handoff decision phase by presenting different decision algorithms.
