Preparation of Sm-Ru bimetallic alloy films on Ru(0001) surface by vapour-deposition and annealing

Abstract: Sm-Ru intermetallic surface alloy films were prepared by vacuum deposition and annealing of rare earth Sm on single crystal Ru(0001) surface. The Ru 3dand Sm 3dcore level spectra clearly show the formation of surface alloy layers. XPS measurements on surface alloy film revealed an induced peak in the Ru 3dregion at lower binding energy by 1 eV compared to the bulk Ru (elemental) suggesting an electronic effect of alloying and Sm-Ru bond formation. The Sm 3d5/2photoemission peak of Sm film consists of strong features characteristic of Sm(II) with electron configuration 4f6(5d6s)2and Sm(III) with electron configuration 4f5(5d6s)3.It is observed that the Sm(II) feature decreases in intensity upon alloy formation with surface Ru atoms. Oxidation of these films with carbon monoxide indicates alloy breakdown due to the oxidation of Sm atoms selectively. Alloy oxidation also shows a clear shift of Sm 3d5/2feature.

Abstract: Volume 4 of the Handbook is the second of two volumes to cover the more chemical, physico-chemical, structural and environmental aspects of the actinide elements. Leading scientists present critical reviews on important aspects of the behaviour of this radioactive group of elements. Radioactivity has a profound influence on the chemical behaviour of the actinides, in contrast to most other elements. The unusual behaviour of the 5f-elements - delocalization of the electrons for the light actinides versus localization for the heavier ones - makes them an outstanding tool for the scientist, which can be seen by the variety of oxidation states ranging from +1 to +7. Special laboratory techniques must be developed to deal with the problem of the transcurium elements only being available in small amounts (nanograms to micrograms) or only in the tracer scale. Special emphasis is also placed on the fate of actinides released in the environment, e.g. their reaction to carbonate and organic complexing agents in aquatic systems.

Abstract: Nanoscale structural information underlies research aimed at fabricating catalysts in a more controlled way. Surface science methods can provide that information, but the complexity of heterogeneous systems in general hinders the application of these methods to their full potential. In the last decades, a solution to this problem has been found in the use of model systems, ranging from well-defined single crystals of the supported phase to films or particles of that phase on flat or spherical model supports. In this paper, we review the literature on the latter model systems, that is, particles on a model support. Attention is payed to both preparation and use of such model systems.

Abstract: This paper reviews the available data about the structure of bimetallic surfaces where the constituent elements are intermixed at atomic level. These systems include the surface of bulk alloys ('alloy surfaces') and systems resulting from diffusion at metal-metal interfaces ('surface alloys'). All cases where a complete surface crystallographic determination exists are listed and discussed, as well as selected cases where the structural data are not complete but can lead to a model of the atomic structure.
