TL;DR: The health vulnerabilities experienced by transgender sex workers are marked by discrimination, social exclusion, stigma, incarceration contexts, physical, psychological and sexual violence and use of illegal substances and alcohol, in addition to difficulties in accessing essential services such as health, education and leisure.
Abstract: Objective: to identify the health vulnerabilities of transgender sex workers. Method: an integrative review conducted in July 2020 in the PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, CINAHL, IBECS and LILACS databases, with no language or time restrictions. The following descriptors indexed in DeCS and MESH and their respective synonyms were used: “Transgender persons”, “Sex workers” and “Health vulnerability”. The data were analyzed based on thematic analysis. Results: a total of 547 articles were retrieved and, after the selection and analysis process, 34 were included in this review. Four thematic classes emerged: “Knowledge, prevention and exposure to STIs in sex work”; “Use (and abuse) of illegal substances and alcohol”; “The social and structural dimension of vulnerabilities: from weakened support networks to violence reproduced against dissident bodies”; and “Psychosocial diseases, discrimination and challenges of transgender sex workers”. Conclusion: the health vulnerabilities experienced by transgender sex workers are marked by discrimination, social exclusion, stigma, incarceration contexts, physical, psychological and sexual violence and use of illegal substances and alcohol, in addition to difficulties in accessing essential services such as health, education and leisure.

TL;DR: Doctors, mental health, and social service providers should address depression, substance abuse, and forced sex in an attempt to reduce suicidal behaviors among transgender persons.
Abstract: To determine the independent predictors of attempted suicide among transgender persons we interviewed 392 male-to-female (MTF) and 123 female-to-male (FTM) individuals. Participants were recruited through targeted sampling, respondent-driven sampling, and agency referrals in San Francisco. The prevalence of attempted suicide was 32% (95% CI = 28% to 36%). In multivariate logistic regression analysis younger age (<25 years), depression, a history of substance abuse treatment, a history of forced sex, gender-based discrimination, and gender-based victimization were independently associated with attempted suicide. Suicide prevention interventions for transgender persons are urgently needed, particularly for young people. Medical, mental health, and social service providers should address depression, substance abuse, and forced sex in an attempt to reduce suicidal behaviors among transgender persons. In addition, increasing societal acceptance of the transgender community and decreasing gender-based ...

TL;DR: Investigation found that experiencing economic discrimination because one is transgendered had the strongest association with experiencing a transgender related violent incident, and economic discrimination was related totransgendered people's experience with violence.
Abstract: There is a pervasive pattern of discrimination and prejudice against transgendered people within society. Both economic discrimination and experiencing violence could be the result of a larger social climate that severely sanctions people for not conforming to society's norms concerning gender; as such, both would be strongly associated with each other. Questionnaires were distributed to people either through events or through volunteers, and made available upon the World Wide Web. A sample of 402 cases was collected over the span of 12 months (April 1996-April 1997). We found that over half the people within this sample experienced some form of harassment or violence within their lifetime, with a quarter experiencing a violent incident. Further investigation found that experiencing economic discrimination because one is transgendered had the strongest association with experiencing a transgender related violent incident. Economic discrimination was related to transgendered people's experience wit...

TL;DR: In this paper, the feasibility of using Internet research to capture the demographic characteristics of a largely closeted sexual minority and to report such characteristics in the first national study of transgender persons ever attempted in the United States was investigated.
Abstract: As part of a larger study, we investigated the feasibility of using Internet research to capture the demographic characteristics of a largely closeted sexual minority and to report such characteristics in the first national study of transgender persons ever attempted in the United States. To achieve a nonclinical national sample, online convenience sampling was used. Of 1,373 surveys received, 1,229 (90%) were deemed complete and from unique individuals self-identifying as transgender, 18 years or older, and U.S. residents. Participation approximated that predicted by the U.S. Census (2000). Comparison with census data identified the sample as younger, White (non-Hispanic), single, more educated but with less household income, living in smaller towns to medium-sized cities, and less affiliated with traditional Christian denominations. Demographic characteristics differed significantly by both gender and transgender status. The challenge of achieving demographically representative sampling online, as well as implications for future research and policy, are discussed.

Abstract: Trans youth are considered one of the most marginalized and oppressed populations. Many experience transphobia and violence based on their gender identity and expression. This qualitative study describes the school experiences of 24 trans youth in Philadelphia and presents their recommendations for school administrators and educators. To effectively provide a safe learning environment for all students, it is imperative that the voices and experiences of trans youth are heard by education professionals and reflected in their policies and practices.
