Principal factor analysis of project designers’ roles in improving construction projects buildability in Nigeria

Abstract: Purpose Construction industry is a vital sector for economic and national development. However, the industry suffers buildability problems. Improving construction projects buildability is the duty of every key stakeholder. Thus, this study aims to identify and evaluate the project designers’ roles in improving construction projects buildability in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted quantitative research method. A purposive sampling approach was used in identifying the representative sample for the administration of the questionnaire survey. A total of 122 questionnaires were distributed to the targeted construction professionals, out of which 93 questionnaires were sufficiently filled and returned, representing a response rate of 76%. This study used descriptive and inferential statistics for data analyses. Findings The results from factors analysis show that the roles of project designers in improving construction projects buildability in Nigeria can be categorised into two constructs: “discuss fully the design objectives with builders” and “prepare cost effective and buildable designs”. Originality/value This study contributed to more effective buildability studies by highlighting the roles of project designers in improving construction projects buildability in the construction industry. An understanding of these roles is vital for reducing buildability problems as well as for improving and embedding buildability as a practice in construction management.

Abstract: The importance of integrating construction knowledge into the design process has long been recognized by the construction industry. This paper studies early contractor involvement in design and its impact on construction schedule performance through a combined empirical case study and theoretical simulation analysis. Pipe and steel fabricators' inputs at different design stages of industrial construction projects are identified. The case study shows that these inputs lead to improved drawing quality, material supply, information flow, and consequently improved construction schedule performance. This impact on construction schedule is illustrated using actual project data and simulation techniques. Simulation models were developed to demonstrate intuitively the impact at the construction operation level and they allow people to gain management insights through simulation experiments. Better understanding of the early contractor involvement process and its benefit can improve buy-in and help industry practitioners to reach the full potential of this concept.

Abstract: Research in science education is to discover the truth which involves the combination of reasoning and experiences. In order to find out appropriate teaching methods that are necessary for teaching science students problem-solving skills, different research approaches are used by educational researchers based on the data collection and analysis used at a given time. Though qualitative and quantitative research methods lies on separate continuum, they all aimed at identifying educational problems using different approach. This study critically examined the usefulness of both qualitative and quantitative approaches in researching problem-solving ability in science education curriculum. In doing this, six articles relating to problem-solving were examined to show the usefulness of both qualitative and quantitative research approaches to educational research. Advantages, disadvantages, strengths and weaknesses of both methods were discussed. Ethical consideration in relation to research in problem-solving instructions were discussed as well as suggestion for future research.

Abstract: This study was undertaken to identify the most significant gaps between the potential benefits of applying constructability principles to Alberta, Canada, industrial projects and the benefits typically realized in industry practice. This study also aims to gain an understanding of the barriers that commonly restrict constructability benefits. The data for this survey was obtained by administering a survey based on the Construction Industry Institute's 17 constructability principles. The results of this study indicate collaborative industry effort should be focused in the areas where the largest gaps currently exist between potential and realized benefits. These include among other things, involvement of construction in the design phase, building mutual trust, respect, and credibility between project planners, designers, and constructors.
