Researchers use multiple informants' reports to assess and examine behavior. However, informants' reports commonly disagree. Informants' reports often disagree in their perceived levels of a behavior (“low” versus “elevated” mood), and examining multiple reports in a single study often results in inconsistent findings. Although researchers often espouse taking a multi-informant assessment approach, they frequently address informant discrepancies using techniques that treat discrepancies as measurement error. Yet, recent work indicates that researchers in a variety of fields often may be unable to justify treating informant discrepancies as measurement error. Parents' Religiosity, Family Socialization and the Mental Health of Children in Hong Kong: Do Raters Make a Difference?

Abstract: Family socialization is important for the development and well-being of children. However, few studies have investigated how parents' religiosity influences childrens mental health through parental psychological health and family socialization. Whats more important, prior family studies generally drew their conclusions by heavily relying on the perspective of either the parents or the offspring and considering family socialization as tantamount to parenting. The current study uses multi-informant perspectives of the parents or the children or average of the both to investigate the above mentioned relationships, and treats family socialization as a multi-faceted concept. The findings generally support the beneficial effects of parents religiosity on their psychological health and family socialization, which in turn contribute to the mental health in children. TL;DR: The results suggest that a two phase, screen-confirm approach is likely a useful strategy to detect incapacitating mental disorders in humanitarian contexts where mental health specialists are scarce, and that in the context of a multi-step screen confirm mechanism, the household informant portion of field-test version of the WASSS may be an efficient screening tool to identify adults in greatest need for mental health care in humanitarian settings.
