TLDR
This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem- based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn.
Abstract
In this book, the authors address some basic problems in the learning of biomedical science, medicine, and the other health sciences Students in most medical schools, especially in basic science courses, are required to memorize a large number of ""facts,"" facts which may or may not be relevant to medical practice Problem-based learning has two fundamental postulates--the learning through problem-solving is much more effective for creating a body of knowledge usable in the future, and that physician skills most important for patients are problem-solving skills, rather than memory skills This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem-based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn

Technology I, II and III: Criteria for Understanding and Improving the Practice of Instructional Technology

TL;DR: It is recommended that instructional technologists adopt the criteria of Technology I, II, and III, so they may better develop instruction of a quality consistent with the innovative instructional principles they claim, and that best characterizes the goals they have for their practice.

Using concept mapping to evaluate knowledge structure in problem-based learning

TL;DR: The data indicated that PBL had a strong effect on the acquisition and integration of knowledge, including situational learning, problem spaces, and small group interactions, which can help students to acquire more concepts, achieve an integrated knowledge structure, and enhance clinical reasoning.

Development and evaluation of a community based, multiagency course for medical students: descriptive survey.

TL;DR: The University of Leicester has a viable mechanism for providing a community based, multiagency course for all its medical students and many of the principles applied in the development and implementation of the course could be transferred to other medical schools.

Expert decision making in physical therapy--a survey of practitioners.

TL;DR: Whether a particular cognitive style was prevalent among expert clinicians, to identify preferred sources of information for clinical decision making, and to determine the similarities and differences between American and Australian therapists were studied.

Analyzing the Emergence of a Learning Issue in a Problem-Based Learning Meeting

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the interaction within a Problem-Based Learning tutorial meeting leading to the generation of a Learning Issue (LI) and introduce the term Knowledge Assessment Segment (KAS) for important stretches of interaction during which participants identify learning issues.
