TLDR
This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem- based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn.
Abstract
In this book, the authors address some basic problems in the learning of biomedical science, medicine, and the other health sciences Students in most medical schools, especially in basic science courses, are required to memorize a large number of ""facts,"" facts which may or may not be relevant to medical practice Problem-based learning has two fundamental postulates--the learning through problem-solving is much more effective for creating a body of knowledge usable in the future, and that physician skills most important for patients are problem-solving skills, rather than memory skills This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem-based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn

Building bridges within learning communities through ontologies and thematic objects

TL;DR: This article explores the potential of extending communication through artefacts to heterogeneous, anonymous and asynchronous learner communities by drawing on existing work, e.g. in the areas of "social navigation" and recommender systems.
Journal ArticleDOI

Assessment in basic science instruction: directions for practice and research.

TL;DR: Assessment of students' understanding of the basic biomedical sciences during the basic science component of medical education and some of the special assessment issues and problems that arise in the context of problem-based learning (PBL) are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

A computer simulation designed for problem-based learning.

TL;DR: The computer simulation described attempts to analyse a posteriori how students reason and learn during problem‐based learning sessions in order to understand the way in which students learn.
Journal ArticleDOI

Developing a problem-based learning simulation: An economics unit on trade

TL;DR: It is argued that the merger of simulations and problem-based learning (PBL) can enhance both active-learning strategies and help students and teachers sift through the overwhelming complexity that can arise in a more pure PBL.
Journal ArticleDOI

Problem-Based Learning (PBL): Conceptions and Approaches of Undergraduate Students of Nursing

TL;DR: Students participating in their first PBL subject generally reported unsophisticated conceptions of and approaches to learning which were not linked to professional practice outcomes, however, those completing the last PBLsubject had recognised the link between participation in the process and the development of knowledge and skills for professional practice.
