TLDR
This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem- based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn.
Abstract
In this book, the authors address some basic problems in the learning of biomedical science, medicine, and the other health sciences Students in most medical schools, especially in basic science courses, are required to memorize a large number of ""facts,"" facts which may or may not be relevant to medical practice Problem-based learning has two fundamental postulates--the learning through problem-solving is much more effective for creating a body of knowledge usable in the future, and that physician skills most important for patients are problem-solving skills, rather than memory skills This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem-based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn

An analysis of clinical reasoning through a recent and comprehensive approach: the dual-process theory

TL;DR: A comprehensive approach is explored: the “dual-process theory”, a model developed by cognitive psychologists over the last few years that highlights the importance of physicians’ intuition and the high level of interaction between analytical and non-analytical processes.

Authority and Accountability: The Delivery of Diagnosis in Primary Health Care

TL;DR: Through the coordination of the design and placement of their diagnostic turns, the doctors treat themselves as accountable for the evidential basis of the diagnosis, and thereby do not claim unconditional authority in relation to the patients.

Blended learning positively affects students’ satisfaction and the role of the tutor in the problem-based learning process: results of a mixed-method evaluation

TL;DR: To enhance students’ motivation and satisfaction and to overcome the problems with the changing quality of tutors, online learning and face-to-face classes were systematically combined resulting in a blended learning scenario (blended problem-based learning—bPBL).

The future of engineering education iii. developing critical skills

TL;DR: In this article, a variety of instructional methods have been shown to improve student learning, and the application of some of those methods to the development of the desired skills is considered, while most instructors are unaware of the fundamental research that provides a foundation for developing the skills.

Theory to reality: a few issues in implementing problem-based learning

TL;DR: This paper attempts to describe what research evidence is needed to fill in missing information about problem-based learning (PBL) and obtain a more accurate picture of PBL as an instructional method and its effects on students’ learning.
