Pnin foregrounds the agonies of translation through a thematic treatment of pain, which is the white noise of the novel, a constant pulse throbbing in the background. The ideas of Wittgenstein and Elaine Scarry suggest that pain is fundamentally resistant to language; Pnin, which invokes both personal and historical suffering, stages a critical response to contemporary theories of translation that have attempted to transform human "suffering" into an "inhuman" linguistic phenomenon. Through the novel's cavalier play with ontological and epistemological boundaries—recreating author as character while invoking physical suffering and the immutable tragedy of the Holocaust—Nabokov creates a character who also "leaves his creator's desk," despite attempts by the narrative to translate, limit, ridicule, and appropriate him. This discussion presents a response to recent questions regarding the role of suffering in Nabokov's work raised by Zoran Kuzmanovich and Elena Sommers.

Une analyse prosodique experimentale a ete ici realisee sur 18 enfants implantes cochleaires issus d'une large base de donnees de 50 enfants suivis a 9 ans post-implant en vue d'etablir des profils d'organisation rythmique et melodique au niveau metrique, phonologique et morphosyntaxique L'analyse a revele que les enfants implantes apres l'âge de deux ans et demi accedent plus difficilement a l'organisation rythmique de la parole que les enfants implantes avant cet âge Cette etude suggere qu'une interaction complexe entre les dynamiques de maturation et de la plasticite corticale pourrait moduler les etapes de traitement de la prosodie chez l'enfant implante et montre qu'une application d'un systeme d'annotation prosodique pourrait donner des indications precieuses pour le bilan orthophonique et la prise en charge des enfants implantes cochleaires

This article develops an analysis of verbless exclamative clauses in Romance; in this type of reduced clause the predicative complement precedes the subject and is separated from it by an intonational break, while the missing verb is interpreted as a copula. After the discussion of some peculiar properties of evaluative predicates, the crosslinguistic interpretive hallmarks of verbless exclamatives are described on the basis of data from Italian, Spanish and French. It will be argued that the absence of a wh-modifier in this structure corresponds to the speaker’s intention to establish a relation between the subject and an evaluative predicate. The fact that the property expressed by the predicate must belong to the individual-level category follows from its being presented as an intrinsic feature of the subject. Moreover, the fact that comparatives and relative superlatives are generally excluded from verbless exclamatives witnesses that no comparison with other entities is allowed, as this would restrict the validity of the evaluation. 1 1 . Verbless exclamatives across Romance: standard expectations and tentative evaluations

On ne dispose pas encore d'un livre qui offre une theorie globale du signe: dans les introductions ä la semiotique, on tröuve quelques indications sur la fonction du signe et sur la division des signes, mais on ne repond que tres rarement ä la question 'qu'est-ce qu'un signe'? A mon avis il est necessaire de distinguer plusieurs problemes partiels: (1) Qu'est-ce qu'un signe (ou qu'est-ce qu'on considere comme un signe, et pour quelles raisons)? (2) Est-ce que la relation entre le signe et ce dont il est signe est une relation naturelle ou une relation conventionnelle? (3) a-t-il certains types ou certaines classes de signes qu'on peut distinguer et quels sont les criteres utilises pour les distinguer? (4) Comment distingue-t-on le signe linguistique des signes non linguistiques? (5) Quelles sont les fonctions du signe linguistique? Les memes questions peuvent etre posees ä un niveau superieur, celui de la semiotique, la doctrine des signes. (1) Qu'est-ce que la semiotique (ou: qu'est-ce qu'on entend par 'semiotique')? (2) Quelles sont les dimensions qu'on peut distinguer ä l'interieur de la semiotique (cf. Morris 1938, 1946, 1971 et Lieb 1971)? (3) Peut-on distinguer la semiotique du langage humain des autres branches semiotiques (cf. Wells 1967)? Ces problemes constitueront le point de depart de nos reflexions sur la theorie du signe qu'on tröuve dans la Grammaire et la Logique de PortRoyal.
