Cet article contribue a la definition de la semiotique culturelle, ou semiotique de la culture en differenciant plusieurs approches. De la, l'A. definit plusieurs concepts comme ceux de non-culture ou d' extra-culture, definis par l'opposition traditionnelle entre Ego et Alter -telle qu'elle a ete entendue par Benveniste (1966)- et commente les considerations sur l'alterite proposees par Bakhtin et Peirce. L'A. propose une reflexion a partir des exemples suivants : 1) la rencontre des cultures lors de la conquete des Ameriques a travers l'etude critique des travaux de Todorov (1982) et Gruzinski (1990) ; 2) l'opposition culturelle entre les hommes et les femmes analysee par Foucault (1976, 1984) dans son histoire de la sexualite.

Throughout its history, America has been the scene of multiple encounters between communities speaking different languages. Literature has long sought to represent these encounters in various ways, from James Fenimore Cooper's frontier fictions to the Jewish-American writers who popularised Yiddish as a highly influential modern vernacular. While other studies have concentrated on isolated parts of this history, Lawrence Rosenwald's book is the first to consider the whole story of linguistic representation in American literature, and to consider as well how multilingual fictions can be translated and incorporated into a national literary history. He uses case studies to analyse the most important kinds of linguistic encounters, such as those between Europeans and Native Americans, those between slaveholders and African slaves, and those between immigrants and American citizens. This ambitious, engaging book is an important contribution to the study of American literature, history and culture.

Multilingual America: Language and the Making of American Literature

Most grammatical units present various related meanings depending on the linguistic and extra-linguistic context in which they are used. This polysemy has often been dealt with by assuming a first concrete meaning, from which the other meanings are derived. For instance, many prepositions are supposed to be primarily spatial, their non-spatial uses being metaphorical. Here we contest such a point of view and we propose a theoretical framework in which grammatical units are tools specialised in constructing what we call verbal scenes, which are evoked by utterances. In this approach, one can associate every grammatical unit with a unique schematic form, which indicates how the unit interact with the linguistic and extralinguistic context. The schematic form is directly formulated in terms of the properties of the verbal scene. In particular, verbal scenes possess and abstract topological structure and the meaning of the so-called spatial prepositions can be described in abstract topological terms accounting for all their different meanings .
