Abstract: . Complex noun phrases crosslinguistically contain meaningless elements whose sole function is to serve as linkers of predicates to their subjects—thus, Mandarin Chinese de links inverted AP predicates to their subjects as well as possessors, PPs, relative clauses, and noun-complement clauses (e.g., the claim that John was asleep). Taking a comparative analysis of French de and Thai thii as its point of departure, this paper argues for a maximally generalized account of the noun phrases in which linkers occur, in terms of DP-internal Predicate Inversion. This approach prompts an analysis of relative-clause constructions that recognizes relative clauses as predicates of DP-internal small clauses, combining the attractions of the traditional approach and the Vergnaud/Kayne raising approach by assigning relative clauses an internal structure similar to the traditional one while giving it the external distribution of a predicate by treating it as the predicate of a noun-phrase-internal small clause. For noun-complement clauses, the approach leads to a revitalization of Stowell's (1981) predication approach to the relationship between the head noun and the clause, the latter serving as the former's subject in a DP-contained small-clause structure. A uniform linker approach to French de, Thai thii, Mandarin Chinese de, Japanese no, and so on (a) emphasizes the pervasiveness of Predicate Inversion in the noun phrase, (b) confirms the role of linkers as purely functional aides to the inversion operation, (c) furthers our understanding of the structure and derivation of complex noun phrases, and (d) presents a particularly interesting window on microparametric variation in the syntax of noun phrases.

Abstract: Chomsky (1981: 188, 220; 1986a: 166) formulates the Binding Theory essentially as in (1).(1) (A) An anaphor must be locally bound(B) A pronoun must not be locally bound(C) An R-expression must not be boundThe notion ‘bound’ is defined as ‘c-commanded by a co-referential element’. As for the notion ‘locally’, that of Chomsky (1986a) differs somewhat from that of Chomsky (1981), and much recent literature addresses the issue, especially in connection with the phenomenon of ‘Long Distance Anaphora’. (For relevant discussion see Burzio (1989c and references therein) and also Levinson, this volume.) For most of our purposes, it will be sufficient to assume Chomsky's (1981: 188) ‘within its [i.e. the anaphor's/pronoun‘s] governing category’, or even the formally simpler (though empirically less adequate) ‘within the same minimal clause’. The empirical effects of the Binding Theory in (1) can then be illustrated as in (2a, b, c) – instances of local binding, non-local binding, and no binding respectively. In each case the connecting line expresses intended co-reference, much as co-indexation in later examples. Each ungrammatical case is accounted for by the principle indicated in parentheses.

Abstract: L'association litterature / interculturel est l'un des axes majeurs du retour du texte litteraire dans l'enseignement du FLE. Elle s'accompagne d'un interet particulier pour les litteratures francophones qui semblent plus a meme de tenir ce role de passeur de langues et de cultures attribue au texte litteraire. Ce travail au carrefour de la didactique des langues et de la litterature et de l'analyse du discours en interaction analyse les dynamiques (inter)culturelles qui se developpent, de maniere effective, lorsque des textes litteraires sont lus et commentes dans la classe de langue. Nous avons mene une enquete ethnographique dans differents contextes : notre corpus se constitue de cours enregistres dans deux centres de langues universitaires en France ainsi qu'au sein de la licence de francais de l'universite Alger 2. Nous avons utilise les outils de la linguistique interactionnelle et nous nous sommes tout particulierement interessee aux positionnements et strategies identitaires, a la circulation des codes mobilises / construits pour lire le texte, a la negociation du sens du texte, aux mouvement de decontextualisation et recontextualisation, a la circulation et la reconfiguration des representations dans les echanges. Les analyses effectuees nous ont permis de mettre en evidence quelques-unes des modalites de la mise en relation entre "soi" et l'autre / les autres suscitees par la lecture des textes litteraires. Elles temoignent aussi de tensions, relatives au statut ambigu de la litterature dans les contextes envisages, et aux difficultes rencontrees pour concilier les objectifs parfois contradictoires assignes a l'etude des textes.
