Abstract: The paper shows the inadequacy of the structuralist method with its climax in generative grammar method when applied to our understanding of langauge. It shows the adequation of the cognitive, typological and functional approach. based on croslinguistically empirical data, i show the intrinsically human nature of language, which distinguishes it from other communication sysrtemss, viz. animal, computer and artificial ones,. Points treated in some detail are : Iconicity, Deixis, Multiple encoding, Bi- (not tri-) phonematicity of the Semitic root, the essential Bipartition of the utterance (not necessarily sentence) into [topic and] focus (not subject and predicate), Into-prosody and language's fidelity to sensorial data including those refuted by reason, The conclusion is that it is biology, not mathematics, which is best adapted to the study of language, since iot is a biologically evolutive and dynamical phenomenon, not a mathematical one.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors make a distinction between completion and anteriority of preterital forms in the context of Spanish Imperfecto, Perfecto, Pluscuamperfecto and Indefinido by applying three binary tense oppositions.
Abstract: The present paper aims at accounting for the Spanish Imperfecto, Perfecto, Pluscuamperfecto and the Indefinido by applying three binary tense oppositions: Present vs Past, Synchronous vs Posterior and Imperfect(ive) vs Perfect(ive) For the sixteen Spanish tense forms under analysis a binary approach leads to covering twelve of them Their relation with the preterital forms outside the range of the three oppositions is accounted for by two surgical operations: (a) the notion of Imperfect(ive) is severed from the notion of ongoing progress by restricting it to underinformation about completion and by seeing continuous tense forms as involving a more complex semantics; (b) the notion of (non-)stative is strictly severed from interference of information coming from the arguments of a verb These theoretical moves make the way free for a formal-semantic insight into the interaction of Spanish tense and aspect It also paves the way for a principled distinction between completion and anteriority Restricted to tense forms pertaining to the past, our analysis sheds light on the struggle for survival of tense forms outside the binary system

TL;DR: The authors argue that translation should attend more to the phenomenology of reading, triggering creative textual thinking in the responsive reader rather than testing the hermeneutic skills of the professional translator.
Abstract: Offering an original reconceptualization of literary translation, Clive Scott argues against traditional approaches to the theory and practice of translation. Instead he suggests that translation should attend more to the phenomenology of reading, triggering creative textual thinking in the responsive reader rather than testing the hermeneutic skills of the professional translator. In this new guise, translation enlists the reader as an active participant in the constant re-fashioning of the text's structural, associative, intertextual and intersensory possibilities, so that our larger understanding of ecology, anthropology, comparative literature and aesthetics is fundamentally transformed and our sense of the expressive resources of language radically extended. Literary translation thus assumes an existential value which takes us beyond the text itself to how it situates us in the world, and what part it plays in the geography of human relationships.

TL;DR: In this article, a montrer l'utilite d'une approche fonctionnelle-structurelle for l'etude des manuels scolaires en mathematiques.
