Abstract
An objective formulation of the impulse testing procedure is proposed based on models for winding response as well as fault models. Experimental validation of the fault models for breakdown and partial discharge (PD) is provided. A new adaptive filtering approach is proposed for analysis during impulse tests. The procedure is validated with experimental investigation on a 10 section lumped parameter network.

Impulse testing of power transformers - a model reference approach

TL;DR: In this article, an objective classification of faults that can occur during impulse tests on power transformers is proposed, including nonlinear elements, breakdown, and partial discharge events, and an analysis of a layer winding, in the time and frequency domains, with these faults shows that current assessment methods must be used with caution.

Partial discharges during impulse tests

TL;DR: A phenomenological model for partial discharge that can be used for simulation studies in lumped parameter networks is proposed in this paper, where the classical 'abc' model of PD is a subset of the proposed model.

Identification and location of breakdown in windings

TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that the nearest neighbourhood rule based on a clustering approach provides a good framework for fault location. But it is not shown how to estimate the location of the fault based on the resonant frequencies of the winding current.
