TL;DR: A conceptual framework and methodology for managing scheme versioning for the Semantic Web and a proposal to use a value record-similar to a term record in thesaurus management techniques-to manage scheme versioned challenges for theSemantic Web are described.
Abstract: SUMMARY This paper describes a conceptual framework and methodology for managing scheme versioning for the Semantic Web. The first part of the paper introduces the concept of vocabulary encoding schemes, distinguished from metadata schemas, and discusses the characteristics of changes in schemes. The paper then presents a proposal to use a value record-similar to a term record in thesaurus management techniques-to manage scheme versioning challenges for the Semantic Web. The conclusion identifies future research directions.

TL;DR: This paper provides a first look at structuring financial accounting standards to support information retrieval where document content is subject to frequent changes.
Abstract: This paper provides a first look at structuring financial accounting standards to support information retrieval where document content is subject to frequent changes. The continual amendment of financial accounting standards results in the distribution of the specification of many accounting rules across multiple documents. Digital representation of financial accounting standards is suggested as an effective means toward improving the access to the standards. XML document type definitions (DTDs) are used to specify the grammar for the structure as well as the content of the financial accounting standards. The design of the DTDs reveals significant deficiencies in the current structure of financial accounting standards that preclude automation of retrieval schemes that incorporate temporal reconstruction. The deficiencies also include the lack of a hierarchical structure and a both consistent and sound arrangement. Suggestions are made for changing the structure and content of financial accounting standard...

TL;DR: In this paper, an established methodology for building classifications and subject indexing systems, called facet analysis, has been applied to thesauri, but has not been rigorously applied to construct a compatible thesaurus from the schedules of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification 2nd edition.
Abstract: Facet analysis is an established methodology for building classifications and subject indexing systems, but has been less rigorously applied to thesauri. The process of creating a compatible thesaurus from the schedules of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification 2nd edition highlights the ways in which the conceptual relationships in a subject field are handled in the two types of retrieval languages. An underlying uniformity of theory is established, and the way in which software can manage the relationships is discussed. The manner of displaying verbal expressions of concepts (vocabulary control) is also considered, but is found to be less well controlled in the classification than in the thesaurus. Nevertheless, there is good reason to think that facet analysis provides a sound basis for structuring a variety of knowledge organization tools.

TL;DR: This article examines the use of facets to facilitate the efficient organization and browsing of tags into manageable and distinct categories and suggests suggestions to guide the design of a more rigorous methodology.
Abstract: An increasingly difficult challenge in social tagging applications is negotiating the number of existing tags. This article examines the use of facets to facilitate the efficient organization and browsing of tags into manageable and distinct categories. Current and proposed methodologies for the application of facets in social tagging applications are evaluated. Results of this analysis indicate that these methodologies provide insufficient guidelines for the choice, evaluation, and maintenance of the facets. Suggestions are made to guide the design of a more rigorous methodology for the application of facets to social tagging applications.

TL;DR: In this paper, a story of a practitioner's experience in a First Nations library and how it shaped a doctoral research project on knowledge organization is described, connecting the landscape on the edge of a pacific forest to considerations of the impacts of the erasures of Indigenous knowledges by dominant knowledge organization systems and practices.
Abstract: This paper tells a story of a practitioner's experience in a First Nations library and how it shaped a doctoral research project on knowledge organization. It connects the landscape on the edge of a pacific forest to considerations of the impacts of the erasures of Indigenous knowledges by dominant knowledge organization systems and practices. The LIS literature on cultural bias in knowledge organization is reviewed and some ameliorative initiatives described. A theoretical lens is created by conjoining the new sociology of education with analyses by Indigenous governance organizations. The potential of LIS research to contribute to the naming and reclaiming of Indigenous knowledges is highlighted and a proposed research plan to contribute to methodologies for Indigenous knowledge organization is outlined.
