TL;DR: A theory of public knowledge is offered for the purposes of defining more clearly its role in information systems and classification schemas, finding that it is consensual, it does not imply complete truth or certainty, it is autonomous, and it has a constant renewal of old knowledge with new knowledge.
Abstract: A theory of public knowledge is offered for the purposes of defining more clearly its role in information systems and classification schemas. Public knowledge is knowledge intended to be available for use in a public system. It is knowledge accessible to the public or knowledge in the public arena as opposed to the other seemingly multitudinous ways to describe knowledge. Furthermore, there are many different public arenas or small worlds. Public knowledge, irrespective of these different arenas, has four important overlying characteristics: It is consensual, it does not imply complete truth or certainty, it is autonomous, and it has a constant renewal of old knowledge with new knowledge. Each of these attributes has been culled from a study of the works of Patrick Wilson, Karl Popper, and John Ziman.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an analysis of some examples of classification in Ranganathans' work, when confronted with the current settings to their categories reveal certain differences, illustrating the importance of context and understanding of the theoretical use of categories for the purpose of organizing knowledge assumptions.
Abstract: Ranganathans’ Faceted Classification Theory has recently been used as a basis for organizing domains of knowledge in several areas, as it provides a set of high-level categories that allow a guiding principle to represent these areas. Originally, however, his focus usage was the organization of documents on the shelves and to describe subjects in libraries. This change of purpose as well as the difficulty in understanding the work of Ranganathan seems to bring a cost associated to the initiatives of application of his theories, in particular regarding the identification of categories of Personality and Matter. Supporting this proposition, we have the analysis of some examples of classification in Ranganathans’ work, when confronted with the current settings to their categories reveal certain differences. The objective of this paper is to present an analysis of these differences, illustrating the importance of context and understanding of the theoretical use of categories for the purpose of organizing knowledge assumptions. As a result, we present a systematization of questions arising from this analysis, we call ontological analysis, and shows the importance of considering the context in faceted classification as well as to understand the assumptions that guide the definition of categories that support a classificatory structure.

Abstract: This paper maps the concepts “space” and “dimensionality” in classifications, in particular in visualizations hereof, from a historical perspective. After a historical excursion in the domain of classification theory of what in mathematics is known as dimensionality reduction in representations of a single universe of knowledge, its potentiality will be explored for information retrieval and navigation of the World Wide Web.
