The faceted structure of the Colon Classification is based upon the idea of five fundamental categories. Of these that of personality is generally recognised as the most important. The definitions of personality found in the literature suggest a concept that is to be understood in subject terms only, ignoring the crucial relationships between the vsers of subject materials and the subject itself. The limitations and irrelevance of such a concept in practice and the various attempts made to define personality are examined.

In any literature searh one must be able to predict which modes of expression have been used to represent the concepts of interest in the search file. It is these lingual expressions which will be looked up or will constitute the search parameters in a mechanized search. In the case of general concepts and statements, uncontrolled natural language lacks the required representational predictability, as is demonstrated, for example, for classes of chemical compounds and for types of reactions. Hence, considerable loss of relevant information is bound to occur in searches for these concepts in free text files, regardless of how advanced a computer program may be. By restricting the modes of expression as is achieved by means of an indexing language and its reliable employment, predicability is increased and, consequently, information loss is drastically reduced.—In contrast, the modes of expression for individual concepts (e.g. individual chemical substances, authors, institutions) are, by their vary nature, often sufficiently predictable in uncontrolled natural language. In these cases, the value of translating them into indexing-language expressions is often questionable. This holds true in particular if an indexing language does not (yet) provide adequate expressions to represent the concepts, and also in the case of ambiguous natural language expressions. Here, preserving the original, uncontrolled terms in the search file is advisable, at least in addition to an attempted translation into the indexing language.—The weaknesses of uncontrolled natural language files become apparent only at a rather late stage in the continual expansion of an information system. In its early stages the necessity of predictability is reduced through the effectiveness of human memory and the—initially—relatively high homogeneity of the experts' linguistic usage during that short period of time. Furthermore, loss of relevant information as a consequence of the lack of predictability will at first be minimal and will not yet be noticed as a steadily increasing source of search failure. Nor does the steady rise in costs for excogitating and phrasing queries with more and more alternatives become apparent at this stage. It is largely for these reasons that uncontrolled natural language systems have unjustifiably frequently been preferred. The typical weakness and strengths of both kinds of language suggest combining them so that their inherent strengths are retained and utilized as far as possible.

One of the important aspects of Classification research in India (carried out mainly at DRTC, Bangalorej is the design of the depth Classification version of Colon Classification for various compound subjects. This was initiated by Dr. S.. R. Ranganathan in 1964, and in recent years it has been continued under the able guidance of Professor A. Neelameghan at DRTC. Many depth schedules have been published so far on various subject fields. By adopting the pattern followed in the design of depth schedules at DRTC, this paper describes the basic Steps required for the design of special Classification schedules on the Idea and Verbal Planes. A gulded analytico-synthetic scheme of Classification such äs Colon Classification is based on postulates for the Idea Plane and for the Notational Plane(7). In an a priori approach to the design of a Classification scheme of this kind, we may consider all the possible subjects likely to arise äs the result of the attachtnent of the various kinds of isolates to a particular Basic Class. These isolates will be manifestations of any of the five Fundamental Categories occurring in any round and at any level. Thus, considering all the possible subjects in this way helps us in the design of a special scheme of Classification.

Design of Special Classification Schedules Based on the Principles of Colon Classification (Edition 7)

In this paper, we provide an introduction to the concept of digital object reuse and its various connotations in the context of current digital libraries, archives, and repositories. We will then propose a faceted categorization of the various types, contexts, and cases for digital object reuse in order to facilitate understanding and communication and to provide a conceptual framework for the assessment of digital object reuse by various cultural heritage and cultural memory organizations. 1.0 Introduction The emergence of large scale digital libraries and repositories such as HathiTrust, the Internet Archive, Europeana, and the Digital Public Library of America provides new opportunities for digital information users to openly and freely interact with, use and reuse a broad range of digital objects. The unprecedented availability of massive digital collections of books, manuscripts, images, photos, and maps offers new, individual and collective ways of making sense of information and of creating digital content. The implications of using, reusing, and repurposing digital content and collections, in this open and information-rich environment, are profound and multifaceted, cutting across many different institutional contexts such as libraries, archives and museums, as well as numerous disciplines and a wide range of user communities and audience types. Access to digital libraries, in particular, has been closely associated with and discussed in regards to such measures of impact, value, and usefulness. In fact, a cursory glance at many digital library evaluation models that have been developed in the past two decades, demonstrates the importance of impact assessment and usability of digital libraries. In today’s world, digital information users, academic as well as the general public, are able to make use of digital libraries to read, explore, entertain, write, research, create, and contextualize. Users engage in a diverse range of information practices and tasks, including searching, retrieving, using, learning, conceptualizing, synthesizing, presenting and disseminating. The reuse of digital objects can, for instance, be imagined in the context of educational, cultural, artistic, historical, geographical, and genealogical research and exploration. Recent research stressed the importance of and the need for developing a digital object reuse assessment framework that would support the digital library community in understanding, identifying, and categorizing digital object reuse cases and contexts to assist in measuring the value and impact of digital objects, not only for academic communities, but also for the general public (O’Gara, 2018).
