TL;DR: It has been observed that there are similarities between modes of formation of words and subjects and it has been concluded that there may be some similarities of intrinsic properties between them.
Abstract: The basic implication of a subject in the context of library and information science is outlined here. It is pointed outthat the purview of library and information science mostly reckons any subject in the form of some either assigned orderived terms or keywords. The basic concepts of words as per the scope of linguistics are also provided. Different modes offormation of complex and compound subjects as enunciated by Ranganathan are described. The modes of formation ofcompound words as depicted in linguistics have been described and compared with different modes of formation of complexand compound subjects as portrayed by Ranganathan, Neelameghan, Seetharama and Sen. It has been observed that thereare similarities between modes of formation of words and subjects. As similarities are observed at the very basic foundationlevel between words and subjects, therefore it has been concluded that there may be some similarities of intrinsic propertiesbetween them. The specific words belonging to a particular subject domain or subject-specific words that are commonlyknown as keywords may thus be recognized as eventual denomination or fundamental building block of the concernedsubject. The keywords may thus be looked upon as molecule of a subject from linguistic viewpoint.

TL;DR: The author brings to light attempts made at providing a base for continuous improvements in the scheme and bringing it back to life.
Abstract: The paper presents a case for the revival of Colon Classification (CC). It traces the status of CC in brief and discusses its features. The author brings to light attempts made at providing a base for continuous improvements in the scheme and bringing it back to life. Measures for the revival of CC are suggested.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe four waves of Ranganathan's dynamic theory of classification, and describe the components that distinguish each wave, and porposes ways in which this understanding can inform systems design in the contemporary environment, particularly with regard to interoperability and scheme versioning.
Abstract: Describes four waves of Ranganathan’s dynamic theory of classification. Outlines components that distinguish each wave, and porposes ways in which this understanding can inform systems design in the contemporary environment, particularly with regard to interoperability and scheme versioning. Ends with an appeal to better understanding the relationship between structure and semantics in faceted classification schemes and similar indexing languages.

TL;DR: A BBC project to bring together Archive and Production workspaces in which various metadata and KOS integration issues were encountered is described.
Abstract: Unifying diverse content silos requires not simply bringing together assets, but also the metadata used to manage those assets. Often, as part of technology change projects, different Knowledge Organization Systems (KOSs), such as taxonomies and ontologies, need to be related. This may involve brokering agreements between different organizational or departmental cultures. Much work on developing metadata crosswalks has been at the heading or label level, but semantic analysis also needs to be undertaken when mapping diverse KOSs and, in practice, often needs to balance preservation of local or specialized terminology with accessibility for general users. This article, based on a presentation given at the second biennial conference of the UK chapter of the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO UK), describes a BBC project to bring together Archive and Production workspaces in which various metadata and KOS integration issues were encountered.
