Abstract: The cultural legacy of the library to contemporary society is examined in order to provide a basis for discussing present changes taking place in the LIS field and in LIS education. By viewing the manifestation of the library over time as an “era-specific” societal phenomenon, the modern library, which began in the mid-19th century and is still present, will be seen as replacing an earlier era-specific library, but also as currently being challenged by the beginnings of a new library era. The modern library is next contrasted with the library it replaced, after which three significant features of the modern library now being challenged are explored and contrasted with the emerging library—how the library is viewed as a social institution; how its normative target public is conceptualized; and what is acceptable as its normative funding. Lastly, speculations are provided as to how LIS education might respond to the challenges and changes that the emerging library is bringing.

Abstract: This paper presents an information representation model based on relationships, called RSHP. A metamodel representation is proposed. The model allows to handle all kind of artifacts (textual, design models, code, databases, etc.) using the same representation schema, and therefore, it is possible to generalize their management in computer systems. The success of the RSHP model depends on the definition of the allowed relationships. A set of them are proposed on this version of the model. Dynamic terms (verbs) must also be modeled to represent actions within the relationships.

Abstract: We concentrate on geospatial ontologies. Our main contribution in this paper is a methodology and a minimal set of guiding principles, inspired by the faceted approach, as originally developed in library science, and a large-scale ontology for Space that we have constructed following the methodology proposed. The approach we propose, centered on the fundamental notions of domain and facet, guarantees the creation of high-quality ontologies in terms of robustness, extensibility, reusability, compactness and flexibility. Taking into account the different aspects of Space, the ontology we have developed, and that we have obtained from the refinement and extension of some existing resources including GeoNames, WordNet and the Italian part of MultiWordNet, provides knowledge about places of the world, their classes, their attributes and the spatial relations between them. The construction procedure was manual for the identification and categorization into facets of the terms denoting classes, relations and attribute names, while it was automatic for the population of the ontology with entities and corresponding attribute values. This has allowed us to obtain a very satisfactory quantitative and qualitative result.

Abstract: SUMMARY Different forms of indexing and search facilities available on the Web are described. Use of facet analysis to structure hypertext concept structures is outlined in relation to work on (1.) development of hypertext knowledge bases for designers of learning materials and (2) construction of knowledge based hypertext interfaces. The problem of lack of closeness between page designers and potential users is examined. Facet analysis is suggested as a way of alleviating some difficulties associated with this problem of designing for the unknown user.

Abstract: A key component in a reuse-oriented software development environment is an appropriate software repository. We present a repository system which supports the entire software development lifecycle, providing for the integrated and consistent representation, organization, storage, and management of reusable artefacts. The system can support multiple development and representation models and is dynamically adaptable to new ones. The chapter focuses on the facilities offered by the system for component classification, an important technique for retrieving reusable software. It is demonstrated that the inherently delicate and complex process of classification is streamlined and considerably facilitated by integrating it into a wider documentation environment and, especially, by connecting it with software static analysis. The benefits in terms of precision, consistency and ease of use can be significant for large scale applications. *
