Abstract: An electrically passive keyboard is provided with an array of keys. Each key is provided with an actuating bar which when depressed cooperates with a plurality of coded shutters. Each shutter is arranged to intercept a beam of light passing from light projecting elements to light collecting elements. Light pulses generated at a light source are coupled to the projecting elements with fiber optic cables. Decoding logic is coupled to the light collectors with fiber optic cables. Delay elements are provided in series in the fiber optic cables so that the decoding elements receives a plurality of binary coded light signals in a predetermined timed sequence which are converted into binary coded electrical signals at a point remote from the electrically passive keyboard.

Abstract: An electric signal transmission transducer employing a ferromagnetic amorphous ribbon and especially an electric signal transmission element and system and an electroacoustic signal conversion system using a ferromagnetic amorphous ribbon. The transmission transducer also provides for applying a magnetic field to the ferromagnetic amorphous ribbon for controlling the electric signal transmission or delay time. Also shown are the electric and magnetic characteristics of ferromagnetic amorphous ribbons after various heat treatments in various magnetic fields.

[Also in Group XL (c)] Time-modulated pulses are produced by variably positioning pick-up coils 40, 46, 50, 54, 56 along a magnetostrictive delay rod 16 in accordance with modulation signals applied to them, the coils receiving pulses from a transmitting coil 11 at the other end, and applying their combined and variably delayed outputs to a radio transmitter or line along with an equallyspaced synchronizing pulse train. The coils may be movedby mechanical connection with coils 41, 47 movable against spring action in the field of permanent magnets 44, 48 by modulation current traversing them, or may be responsive via an aneroid capsule 53 or bi-metallic strip 55 or pressure-responsive piston 57 to signal pressure or temperature. End weights 17, 18 prevent reflections from the ends of the rod. The rod may be replaced by a ribbon or plurality of wires. Alternatively the coils may be coupled to a moving coil longitudinally movable in a pot magnet variably energized by modulation current, all being coaxially mounted on the rod. In a modification the pick-up coil is fixed to the rod and the transmit coil 11 is movable and attached to a moving-coil in a modulation energized electromagnet, and is mounted coaxial with but just off the line, so that only the positive or negative half-cycles of a modulating wave are transmitted, and during absence of modulation no pulses are transmitted. In a further modification the transmitting coil is connected to one end of the rod and both it and the rod are axially moved by modulation relative to a stationary pick-up coil.
