Punishment, proprietariness, and paternity : Men's violence against women from an evolutionary perspective

2.1 Essentially discrete diffraction pattern

  • The property that was at the basis of D. Shechtman's discovery, is the fact that the diffraction patterns show an essentially discrete set of peaks 1 exhibiting forbidden symmetry.
  • This is necessary to allow for individualizing each diffraction spot in indexing it with a finite number of integers in an unambiguous fashion.

3.2 Diffraction

  • Diffraction is the fundamental tool for quasicrystal structure determination.
  • The generalization consists in having a cut space E c different from the parallel space E and the space E σ of the ASs different from E ⊥ .

4.1 Chemical ordering

  • Hence, the effective Mn-Mn pair interaction can be computed between two non magnetic manganese atoms in an Al matrix.
  • These two distances correspond exactly to the first and second distances of the network generated by the cell α.
  • These results of stochiometry and space distribution of the Mn atoms, are in good support of the α network being a reasonable idealization of the Mn chemical order in i-AlPdMn : experimental results on physical properties are very crucial data -beyond diffraction spectra -in the process of validating a structural model in quasicrystals, irrespective of final diffraction refinements.

5 Conclusion

  • It is therefore clear that additional works have to be pursued inside and outside the classical tools of crystallography.
  • Cohesive energy calculations of approximant phases as function of chemical ordering, spectroscopies and physical properties measurements sensible to local configurations should play a key role for eventually leading to unambiguous and fully accepted crystallographic descriptions of these astonishing phases.

Abstract: In this article, we critically examine the social institution of monogamy. First, we discuss the lack of an adequate and consistent definition of the construct of monogamy and consider how common monogamy is. Next, we address perceived benefits of monogamy and whether those ostensible benefits are supported by empirical evidence. We conclude that evidence for the benefits of monogamy relative to other relationship styles is currently lacking, suggesting that, for those who choose it, consensual non-monogamy may be a viable alternative to monogamy. Implications for theories of close relationships are discussed.

Abstract: The article's aim is to evaluate the application of the evolutionary principles of kin selection, reproductive value, and resource holding power to the understanding of family violence. The principles are described in relation to specific predictions and the mechanisms underlying these. Predictions are evaluated for physical violence perpetrated by (a) parents to unrelated children, (b) parents to genetic offspring, and (c) offspring to parents and between (d) siblings and (e) sexual partners. Precise figures for risks have been calculated where possible. The major conclusions are that most of the evidence is consistent with evolutionary predictions derived from kin selection and reproductive value: There were (a) higher rates of violence to stepchildren, (b) a decline in violence with the age of offspring, and (c) an increase in violence with parental age, while (d) violence between siblings was generally at a low level and concerned resource disputes. The issue of distinguishing evolutionary from alternative explanations is addressed throughout and is problematic for predictions derived from reproductive value. The main evolutionary explanation for male partner violence, mate guarding as a result of paternity uncertainty, cannot explain Western studies where sex differences in control and violence between partners were absent, although other aspects of male partner violence are consistent with it, and it may explain sex differences in traditional cultures. Recurrent problems in evaluating the evidence were to control for possible confounds and thus to distinguish evolutionary from alternative explanations. Suggestions are outlined to address this and other issues arising from the review.

Abstract: Just over one hundred and thirty years ago Charles Darwin, in The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871), developed remarkably accurate conclusions about man's ancestry, based on a review of general comparative anatomy and psychology in which he regarded sexual selection as a necessary part of the evolutionary process. But the attention of biologists turned to the more general concept of natural selection, in which sexual selection plays a complex role that has been little understood.
