TL;DR: In this paper, the decision-making processes of patients who either accept or decline DT LVADs were investigated, and they found a strong dichotomy between decision processes with some patients (11 accepters) being automatic and others (3 accepc, 7 decliners) being reflective in their approach to decision making, characterized by a fear of dying and an over-riding desire to live as long as possible.
Abstract: Background—Destination therapy left ventricular assist devices (DT LVADs) are one of the most invasive medical interventions for end-stage illness. How patients decide whether or not to proceed with device implantation is unknown. We aimed to understand the decision-making processes of patients who either accept or decline DT LVADs. Methods and Results—Between October 2012 and September 2013, we conducted semistructured, in-depth interviews to understand patients’ decision-making experiences. Data were analyzed using a mixed inductive and deductive approach. Twenty-two eligible patients were interviewed, 15 with DT LVADs and 7 who declined. We found a strong dichotomy between decision processes with some patients (11 accepters) being automatic and others (3 accepters, 7 decliners) being reflective in their approach to decision making. The automatic group was characterized by a fear of dying and an over-riding desire to live as long as possible: “[LVAD] was the only option I had…that or push up daisies…so ...

TL;DR: The authors examined pedagogies that support positive changes in teacher candidates' conceptions of assessment and found four explicit pedagogical constructs that teacher candidates identified as instrumental in contributing to their learning about assessment.
Abstract: Despite assessment-based accountability movements throughout educational systems in the United States, teacher assessment literacy continues to be an identified area of concern. Contributing to this concern is a dearth of research on preservice assessment education including both its curricular and pedagogical approaches. The purpose of this study was to examine pedagogies that support positive changes in teacher candidates' conceptions of assessment. Drawing on open-ended questionnaire data from teacher candidate participants, this study found four explicit pedagogical constructs that teacher candidates identified as instrumental in contributing to their learning about assessment. Specifically, these constructs were: (a) perspective-building conversations, (b) praxis activities, (c) modeling, and (d) critical reflection and planning for learning. In addition to providing practical descriptive examples of each pedagogical approach, this article concludes with suggestions for future research and practice i...

TL;DR: The aspects that influence participation at different stages of Parkinson’s disease are that those with PD stand out in public, as a result of disease-specific features, and that the disease is unpredictable.
Abstract: Purpose: The aim of this study was to improve our understanding of important aspects of participation in everyday life for people with different levels of severity of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Methods: A qualitative design was used, with empirical data obtained from focus groups. The participants had all been diagnosed with PD at least one year prior to the start of the study. Purposeful sampling was used to ensure that both sexes, with variations in age, marital status, living arrangements, education and employment, were represented. Recruitment continued until saturation was reached and resulted in 29 participants. Homogeneity within each focus group was based on self-rated PD severity (mild, moderate or severe). Findings: The aspects that influence participation at different stages of PD are that those with PD stand out in public, as a result of disease-specific features, and that the disease is unpredictable. Planning was highlighted as a strategy that is required to support participation and ...
