Abstract: CATS is an architecture for building diagnostic expert systems. The authors describe an extension to CATS to support mixed-initiative inferencing. Currently the user cannot volunteer any information other than that requested by the system. Mixed-initiative inferencing will allow that user to do this. Issues discussed are: when the user can volunteer information; what information the user can volunteer; how the system treats that information; and what the system must do when the user-supplied information conflicts with the system's current knowledge. >

Abstract: The selection of a statistical/mathematical software (SMS) system is complicated. The satisfaction derived from a system depends on many variables. This study analyses the influence of SMS predictor variables on satisfaction as determined by multiple regression. The null hypothesis, that multiple correlation coefficient is zero, is rejected. The alternative hypothesis is accepted. This study confirms the theories that suggest that SMS ease of operation, computer reliability, and ease of programming are the major determinants of computer user satisfaction. The factors identified were used in the design of an SMS Expert System based on Artificial Intelligence (ESAI).

Abstract: Rule-based system technology has emerged in recent years as one of the most powerful and successful tools produced by artificial intelligence research. In fact, it provides system designers with a novel perspective on computer programming, that makes it possible to tackle problem solving tasks at a higher level of abstraction, and in a more flexible, effective, and natural way. Thus, rule-based programming appears as a suitable tool for large classes of challenging application domains, where usual programming methods fail. In this paper, it is argued that this new technology may be appropriate for designing intelligent man-machine systems that are required to provide cooperative support to the users of complex artificial systems. The requirements of such interfaces are, in fact, quite beyond mere linguistic competence, and generally include expert assistance and support capabilities that can be implemented with a reasonable effort using a rule-based system approach. The paper introduces first a brief survey on rule-based systems, focusing on the most basic and conceptual aspects of their structure and mode of operation. The features of this new technology are analysed and the advantages it offers discussed. Suitable application domains are also briefly examined, and problems related to the design of expert systems, including life-cycle, development methods, and tools, are dealt with in detail. The definition of man-machine system is then analysed and the concept of the expert interface is introduced and illustrated. The adequacy of the rule-based system approach for the design of expert interfaces is discussed and supported through the presentation of two case studies developed by the authors concerning PROLOG program debugging and on-line information retrieval.

Abstract: It has been claimed that production systems have several advantages over other representational schemes. These include the potential for general self-augmentation (i.e., learning of new behavior) and the ability to function in complex environments. The production system language, OPS, was implemented to test these claims. In this paper we explore some of the issues that bear on the design of production system languages and try to show the adequacy of OPS for its intended purpose.
