01 Sep 1982-Artificial Intelligence (Elsevier)-Vol. 19, Iss: 1, pp 39-88
TL;DR: R1 is a program that configures VAX-11/780 computer systems and uses Match as its principal problem solving method; it has sufficient knowledge of the configuration domain and of the peculiarities of the various configuration constraints that at each step in the configuration process, it simply recognizes what to do.

TL;DR: In this article, a fact format is developed for expressing product knowledge that is domain-specific and can be mapped from other systems, and a domain-independent ASP encoding is provided that represents the concepts in the configuration problem.
Abstract: This is a preliminary work on configuration knowledge representation which serves as a foundation for building interactive configuration systems in Answer Set programming (ASP). The major concepts of the product configuration problem are identified and discussed with a bike configuration example. A fact format is developed for expressing product knowledge that is domain-specific and can be mapped from other systems. Finally, a domain-independent ASP encoding is provided that represents the concepts in the configuration problem.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system is provided with a memory device and a processor, which is adapted to store data representative of a multi-valued decision diagram (MDD) specifying a buildable space of all possible configurations of a vehicle.
Abstract: A system is provided with a memory device and a processor. The memory device is adapted to store data representative of a multi-valued decision diagram (MDD) specifying a buildable space of all possible configurations of a vehicle. The processor is in communication with the memory and is programmed to identify an invalid configuration, and to generate a restricted buildable space, including to determine an edit distance of each complete path indicative of a number of features to change the invalid configuration of that path to one of the valid configurations, identify a minimum of the edit distances, and remove configurations having edit distances larger than the minimum. The processor is further programmed to identify at least one feature to change the invalid configuration to at least one valid configuration based on the restricted buildable space; and to generate output indicative of the at least one feature to change.

TL;DR: The feasibility of applying expert system methodologies to power engineering control design problems is addressed and two expert systems are described, showing that knowledge-based systems, assisted by traditional algorithmic programs, are feasible for design problems in power engineering.
Abstract: The feasibility of applying expert system methodologies to power engineering control design problems is addressed. First, the general concept of artificial intelligence (AI) implementation of design problem-solving techniques and the particular requirements for application to power engineering are discussed. Next, two expert systems, developed by the authors, are described: an expert system for the design of power plant auxiliary electrical systems, ASDEP, and an expert system for the design of secure power systems with respect to voltage control, VOCES. The purpose of ASDEP and VOCES is to show that knowledge-based systems, assisted by traditional algorithmic programs, are feasible for design problems in power engineering. >

TL;DR: A multi-layered ontology is proposed to model the knowledge base of local configuration system, which takes the process knowledge of distributed systems into considered which support integration among distributed configuration systems.
Abstract: The stand-alone knowledge model for typical model based configuration system does not meet the new requirements imposed by online configuration in the distributed and dynamic computing environments for cooperating product and service providers A multi-layered ontology is proposed to model the knowledge base of local configuration system Different from existed configuration models, the proposed ontology takes the process knowledge of distributed systems into considered which support integration among distributed configuration systems Furthermore the process model also provides possibility to optimize algorithm of configuration question resolving The semantic Web services as a platform is utilized to obtain the reuse of available configuration problem solving systems

TL;DR: Some of the issues that bear on the design of production system languages are explored and the adequacy of OPS is tried to show for its intended purpose.
Abstract: It has been claimed that production systems have several advantages over other representational schemes. These include the potential for general self-augmentation (i.e., learning of new behavior) and the ability to function in complex environments. The production system language, OPS, was implemented to test these claims. In this paper we explore some of the issues that bear on the design of production system languages and try to show the adequacy of OPS for its intended purpose.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the role of conflict resolution in providing support for production systems designed to function and grow in environments that make large numbers of different, sometimes competing, and sometimes unexpected demands.
Abstract: Production systems designed to function and grow in environments that make large numbers of different, sometimes competing, and sometimes unexpected demands require support from their interpreters that is qualitatively different from the support required by systems that can be carefully hand crafted to function in constrained environments. In this chapter we explore the role of conflict resolution in providing such support Using criteria developed here, we evaluate both individual conflict resolution rules and strategies that make use of several rules.
