R1: a rule-based configurer of computer systems

01 Sep 1982-Artificial Intelligence (Elsevier)-Vol. 19, Iss: 1, pp 39-88
TL;DR: R1 is a program that configures VAX-11/780 computer systems and uses Match as its principal problem solving method; it has sufficient knowledge of the configuration domain and of the peculiarities of the various configuration constraints that at each step in the configuration process, it simply recognizes what to do.

TL;DR: In this paper, an Expertensystem f graphischc datenverarbeitung zu entwickeln is presented, in doppelter Weise with der graphischen data verfugt uber Expertenwissen.

TL;DR: A small knowledge-based diagnostic system which when combined with conventional programming techniques has led to tangible benefits within a hospital Intensive Care Unit and Pharmacy.
Abstract: Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is a medical technique used to provide a patient's nutritional requirements via intravenous feeding. Critically ill patients must have adequate nutrition but must also have a stable physiology compensated for or treated by drugs. Several factors such as the complex nature of the TPN solution, the cost of the ingredients and the possible interaction of nutrient and drugs has led to the development of small expert system to assist the hospital medical staff in formulating the TPN constituents and assist the pharmacy staff in producing the final solution. This text will describe a small knowledge-based diagnostic system which when combined with conventional programming techniques has led to tangible benefits within a hospital Intensive Care Unit and Pharmacy.

TL;DR: The product configuration technology was implemented on hydro-generator design process, and the result indicated this technology was valuable to realize intelligentization and automation of product configuration.
Abstract: The technology of product configuration in a Product Data Management (PDM) system was discussed in this paper. The paper presented the product configuration modeling technology by based on the ‘and/or’ tree of product configuration, the process relation and coupling relation between components, and then, a general model of the product configuration scheme was proposed. The product configuration algorithm based on the product configuration scheme was also introduced and the feasibility from the theory model to the program was proved. The paper also discussed the application of Case-Based Reasoning(CBR) technology in product configuration, and, the emphasis was given towards the similar component search by the Nearest Neighbor(N-N) method. Finally, the product configuration technology was implemented on hydro-generator design process, and the result indicated this technology was valuable to realize intelligentization and automation of product configuration.

TL;DR: In this article, a brief overview of the proposals for deep knowledge modeling physical processes is presented, and some prospective considerations are made for the application in education of the basic engineering tasks libraries as an alternative or intermediate step to the medium term predictable use of intelligent tutoring systems.
Abstract: The impact or Artificial Intelligence in higher education must be evaluated not only in the computer science curriculum but also in the curriculum of the application areas, where the impact may be even more important. From this view point some considerations have been done in the law knowledge modeling [Kowalski, this volume]and in this paper the possible impact in the engineering field is discussed. First, a brief overview of the proposals for deep knowledge modeling physical processes is presented. Second, the possible approaches for task oriented architectures in different application fields are discussed (design, reliability analysis, real time failure detection and diagnosis, and real time decision support). Finally, some prospective considerations are made for the application in education of the basic engineering tasks libraries as an alternative or intermediate step to the medium term predictable use of intelligent tutoring systems.

TL;DR: Some of the issues that bear on the design of production system languages are explored and the adequacy of OPS is tried to show for its intended purpose.
Abstract: It has been claimed that production systems have several advantages over other representational schemes. These include the potential for general self-augmentation (i.e., learning of new behavior) and the ability to function in complex environments. The production system language, OPS, was implemented to test these claims. In this paper we explore some of the issues that bear on the design of production system languages and try to show the adequacy of OPS for its intended purpose.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the role of conflict resolution in providing support for production systems designed to function and grow in environments that make large numbers of different, sometimes competing, and sometimes unexpected demands.
Abstract: Production systems designed to function and grow in environments that make large numbers of different, sometimes competing, and sometimes unexpected demands require support from their interpreters that is qualitatively different from the support required by systems that can be carefully hand crafted to function in constrained environments. In this chapter we explore the role of conflict resolution in providing such support Using criteria developed here, we evaluate both individual conflict resolution rules and strategies that make use of several rules.
