01 Sep 1982-Artificial Intelligence (Elsevier)-Vol. 19, Iss: 1, pp 39-88
TL;DR: R1 is a program that configures VAX-11/780 computer systems and uses Match as its principal problem solving method; it has sufficient knowledge of the configuration domain and of the peculiarities of the various configuration constraints that at each step in the configuration process, it simply recognizes what to do.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe an attempt to develop a comprehensive computational framework for aiding the engineering design of woven industrial fabrics and develop an analysis of the uniaxial/biaxial load-deformation behavior of a plain woven fabric.
Abstract: This is the first of a three-part series describing an attempt to develop a comprehensive computational framework for aiding the engineering design of woven industrial fabrics. The work has two major aims. The first is to develop a generalized knowledge-based CAD system for use in fabric design. A detailed analytic phase will then follow, which will comprise a set of computational models for the simulation of fabric behavior under external stimuli which will be used for the predictive estimation of some important properties. Accordingly, the second focus of this work is to develop an analysis of the uniaxial/biaxial load-deformation behavior of a plain woven fabric. Part I provides the rationale for choosing this domain of industrial fabric design, and discusses the characteristics and the limitations of current design procedures. It examines the requirements for a computer-based system intended to provide decision-making support for a generic design task. There is a short review of such CAD systems withi...

TL;DR: After discussing manufacturing restrictions in context of product development, different classification criteria for structuring these restrictions are presented and the resulting design catalogue allows the deduction of methods how to operationalize and model single restrictions in a CAD-system.
Abstract: Design guidelines for different manufacturing techniques have already been discussed for decades. Nevertheless, up to date no general framework for the implementation of manufacturing knowledge into 3D-CAD-models can be found. In this article a part of this gap is bridged. After discussing manufacturing restrictions in context of product development, different classification criteria for structuring these restrictions are presented. The resulting design catalogue allows the deduction of methods how to operationalize and model single restrictions in a CAD-system.

TL;DR: The machine-centred approach of current AI technology restricts its application to those problem-solving domains which can be formalized in logical rational rules and ignores the intuitive component which is embedded in the personal experience and in the social and cultural traditions of the user.
Abstract: One of the central planks of development is the enhancement of people’s potential for creative participation in the development process by enhancing the provision of basic human needs such as education, health and welfare. If AI technology has any relevance to these developmental issues (as like any other technology it should), then it must also concern itself with the knowledge of human needs and the nature of expert knowledge which contributes to the design of relevant technologies. In order for people to participate in the development process, they must have knowledge and skills to affect such a process. The machine-centred approach of current AI technology restricts its application to those problem-solving domains which can be formalized in logical rational rules. This approach thus takes account of non-intuitive knowledge and ignores the intuitive component which is embedded in the personal experience and in the social and cultural traditions of the user. The human-centred approach, on the other hand, is based on the human-machine symbiosis and provides for creative participation of users in the design of “developmental” systems.

TL;DR: Some of the issues that bear on the design of production system languages are explored and the adequacy of OPS is tried to show for its intended purpose.
Abstract: It has been claimed that production systems have several advantages over other representational schemes. These include the potential for general self-augmentation (i.e., learning of new behavior) and the ability to function in complex environments. The production system language, OPS, was implemented to test these claims. In this paper we explore some of the issues that bear on the design of production system languages and try to show the adequacy of OPS for its intended purpose.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the role of conflict resolution in providing support for production systems designed to function and grow in environments that make large numbers of different, sometimes competing, and sometimes unexpected demands.
Abstract: Production systems designed to function and grow in environments that make large numbers of different, sometimes competing, and sometimes unexpected demands require support from their interpreters that is qualitatively different from the support required by systems that can be carefully hand crafted to function in constrained environments. In this chapter we explore the role of conflict resolution in providing such support Using criteria developed here, we evaluate both individual conflict resolution rules and strategies that make use of several rules.
