Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.
Abstract: Graphene is the two-dimensional building block for carbon allotropes of every other dimensionality We show that its electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers The D peak second order changes in shape, width, and position for an increasing number of layers, reflecting the change in the electron bands via a double resonant Raman process The G peak slightly down-shifts This allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area

TL;DR: High quality carbon nanodots with high purity were synthesized through a mild, one-step electrochemical approach, without the assistance of any chemicals but only pure water, and a novel photocatalyst (TiO(2)/C-dots) exhibited an excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity.
Abstract: High quality carbon nanodots (C-dots) with high purity were synthesized through a mild, one-step electrochemical approach, without the assistance of any chemicals but only pure water. This high productivity method makes the synthetic process of C-dots synthesis both economical as well as environment-friendly. The as prepared C-dots are predominantly multi-layer graphene oxide, with luminescence and high up-conversion photoluminescence (emission of light at shorter wavelengths than the excitation wavelength). Meanwhile, C-dots showed peroxidise mimetic function and visible-light-sensitive photocatalytic activity for methyl orange degradation. In addition, a novel photocatalyst (TiO2/C-dots) was obtained by combining C-dots with TiO2 through an easy hydrothermal method. Remarkably, TiO2/C-dots exhibited an excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity.

TL;DR: Rayleigh imaging is a general, simple, and quick tool to identify graphene layers, which is readily combined with Raman scattering, that provides structural identification.
Abstract: We investigate graphene and graphene layers on different substrates by monochromatic and white-light confocal Rayleigh scattering microscopy. The image contrast depends sensitively on the dielectric properties of the sample as well as the substrate geometry and can be described quantitatively using the complex refractive index of bulk graphite. For a few layers (<6), the monochromatic contrast increases linearly with thickness. The data can be adequately understood by considering the samples behaving as a superposition of single sheets that act as independent two-dimensional electron gases. Thus, Rayleigh imaging is a general, simple, and quick tool to identify graphene layers, which is readily combined with Raman scattering, that provides structural identification.

TL;DR: This simple and controllable process of buckled graphene provides a feasible fabrication for graphene flexible electronic devices and strain sensors due to its novel mechanical and electrical properties.
Abstract: In this study, we report a buckling approach for graphene and graphene ribbons on stretchable elastomeric substrates. Stretched polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films with different prestrains were used to receive the transferred graphene, and nanoscale periodical buckling of graphene was spontaneously formed after strain release. The morphology and periodicity of the as-formed graphene ripples are dependent strongly on their original shapes and substrates' prestrains. Regular periodicity of the ripples preferred to form for narrow graphene ribbons, and both the amplitude and periodicity are reduced with the increase of prestrain on PDMS. The graphene ripples have the ability to afford large strain deformation, thus making it ideal for flexible electronic applications. It was demonstrated that both graphene ribbon and nanographene film ripples could be used for strain sensors, and their resistance changes upon different strains were studied. This simple and controllable process of buckled graphene provides a feasible fabrication for graphene flexible electronic devices and strain sensors due to its novel mechanical and electrical properties.

TL;DR: A simple, rapid method to reduce GO into pristine graphene using 1- to 2-second pulses of microwaves is reported using microwave-reduced GO (MW- rGO) as the channel material and into particularly high activity for MW-rGO catalyst support toward oxygen evolution reactions.
Abstract: Efficient exfoliation of graphite in solutions to obtain high-quality graphene flakes is desirable for printable electronics, catalysis, energy storage, and composites. Graphite oxide with large lateral dimensions has an exfoliation yield of ~100%, but it has not been possible to completely remove the oxygen functional groups so that the reduced form of graphene oxide (GO; reduced form: rGO) remains a highly disordered material. Here we report a simple, rapid method to reduce GO into pristine graphene using 1- to 2-second pulses of microwaves. The desirable structural properties are translated into mobility values of >1000 square centimeters per volt per second in field-effect transistors with microwave-reduced GO (MW-rGO) as the channel material and into particularly high activity for MW-rGO catalyst support toward oxygen evolution reactions.
