The Morphogenetic Cycle: the basis of the morphogenetic approach 7. Structural and cultural conditioning 8. The morphogenesis of agency 9. Social elaboration.Abstract:
Building on her seminal contribution to social theory in Culture and Agency, in this 1995 book Margaret Archer develops her morphogenetic approach, applying it to the problem of structure and agency. Since structure and agency constitute different levels of stratified social reality, each possesses distinctive emergent properties which are real and causally efficacious but irreducible to one another. The problem, therefore, is shown to be how to link the two rather than conflate them, as has been common theoretical practice. Realist Social Theory: The Morphogenetic Approach not only rejects methodological individualism and holism, but argues that the debate between them has been replaced by a new one, between elisionary theorising and emergentist theories based on a realist ontology of the social world. The morphogenetic approach is the sociological complement of transcendental realism, and together they provide a basis for non-conflationary theorizing which is also of direct utility to the practising social analyst.read more

The Constitution of Space The Structuration of Spaces Through the Simultaneity of Effect and Perception
TL;DR: In this paper, a space-theoretical concept according to which space is constituted through acts as the outcome of synthesis and positioning practices is developed, which opens up a theoretical perspective defining atmospheres as an external effect, instantiated in perception.

The Discourse of 'Voice' and the Problem of Knowledge and Identity in the Sociology of Education
Rob Moore,Johan Muller +1 more
TL;DR: The authors argues that these reductionist, relativistic and perspectival approaches rely upon a simplistic and positivistic caricature of science that appears unaware of significant debates in 'post-empiricist' philosophy of science.

Sociomateriality - Taking the wrong turning?
TL;DR: The claims for sociomateriality are reviewed and two key problems are isolated: a failure to be specific about technology and a neglect of broader social structures are isolated.

Grounded theory and leadership research: A critical realist perspective
Stephen Kempster,Ken Parry +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that for grounded theorists a tension might exist between a desire to create a contextualised theory of leadership and a desire for scientifically justified issues of validity and generalizable theory.

Explaining Homelessness: a Critical Realist Perspective
TL;DR: The authors argue that the prevailing "new orthodoxy" in explanations of homelessness, which attempts to integrate both structural and individual causes, is useful at a descriptive level, but is unsatisfactory at a more profound conceptual level.
