Abstract
Building on her seminal contribution to social theory in Culture and Agency, in this 1995 book Margaret Archer develops her morphogenetic approach, applying it to the problem of structure and agency. Since structure and agency constitute different levels of stratified social reality, each possesses distinctive emergent properties which are real and causally efficacious but irreducible to one another. The problem, therefore, is shown to be how to link the two rather than conflate them, as has been common theoretical practice. Realist Social Theory: The Morphogenetic Approach not only rejects methodological individualism and holism, but argues that the debate between them has been replaced by a new one, between elisionary theorising and emergentist theories based on a realist ontology of the social world. The morphogenetic approach is the sociological complement of transcendental realism, and together they provide a basis for non-conflationary theorizing which is also of direct utility to the practising social analyst.

Welfare-to-work, agency and personal responsibility

TL;DR: In this article, a gap is identified between accounts of agency grounded in the lived experiences of social actors (policy-makers, front-line workers and service users) and hypothetical models of individual agency (e.g. rational economic man) which have been more influential in policy design.

Critical Realism and Historical Sociology. A Review Article

TL;DR: Sokal's controversy has generated bitter divisions between academics who only a decade ago might have stood together on the left or the right and has forged equally strange alliances as mentioned in this paper, leading to the split between epistemological and ontological positions which are usually described as radical constructivism and realist positivism.

The Mechanisms of Emergence

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on emergence in social systems and propose a new tool to explore the mechanisms of social emergence: multi agent-based computer simulation, which they use to resolve the competing claims of methodological individualists and social realists.

Social Media and the Public Sphere

TL;DR: Fuchs as discussed by the authors argues against an idealistic interpretation of Habermas and for a cultural-materialist understanding of the public sphere concept that is grounded in political economy, and argues that the limits of the media and culture grounded in power relations and political economy can only be overcome if the colonisation of the social media lifeworld is countered politically.

The Relational Ontology of Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach: Incorporating Social and Individual Causes

TL;DR: The authors argue that an individual's capabilities emerge from the combination and interaction of individual-level capacities and the individual's relative position vis-a-vis social structures that provide reasons and resources for particular behaviors.
