Abstract
Building on her seminal contribution to social theory in Culture and Agency, in this 1995 book Margaret Archer develops her morphogenetic approach, applying it to the problem of structure and agency. Since structure and agency constitute different levels of stratified social reality, each possesses distinctive emergent properties which are real and causally efficacious but irreducible to one another. The problem, therefore, is shown to be how to link the two rather than conflate them, as has been common theoretical practice. Realist Social Theory: The Morphogenetic Approach not only rejects methodological individualism and holism, but argues that the debate between them has been replaced by a new one, between elisionary theorising and emergentist theories based on a realist ontology of the social world. The morphogenetic approach is the sociological complement of transcendental realism, and together they provide a basis for non-conflationary theorizing which is also of direct utility to the practising social analyst.

Embodiment, experience and theory: in defence of the sociological tradition

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that sociology's central concepts evoke dimensions of human experience that remain highly pertinent to an understanding of the individual and societal significance of the body in the contemporary era, and that it is necessary to reject the dominant problematic of sociology and utilise non disciplinary resources if we are to understand issues surrounding the 'lived experience' of embodiment.

Exploring career transitions: accounting for structure and agency

Reason, emotion and embodiment: is ‘mental’ health a contradiction in terms?

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors take as its starting point a series of traditional divisions and debates on mental health through the specific lens of the emotions and propose new ways forward provided through a commitment to the emotions, their relationship to mental health and to rationality, and their "fate" in late 20th century Western society.

The Cartographic State: Maps, Territory, and the Origins of Sovereignty

TL;DR: Branch et al. as mentioned in this paper examined the important role played by cartography itself in the development of modern states and revealed that early modern mapping dramatically altered key ideas and practices among both rulers and subjects, leading to the implementation of linear boundaries between states and centralized territorial rule within them.
