Abstract: As a systematic risk assessment instrument, failure mode, and effects analysis (FMEA) has been extensively applied for enhancing systems’ quality. However, the classical FMEA technique has limitations in many application scenarios. Although fuzzy logic‐based risk assessment techniques are introduced to enhance conventional FMEA, they still have limitations, for example, needing prior presumptions, neglecting decision‐makers’ bounded rationality, and lacking the capability to reflect the judgmental reliability and randomness of experts’ evaluations simultaneously. To cover these limitations, an extended FMEA method is presented in this paper by using Z‐fuzzy clouds and generalized TODIM (An acronym in Portuguese of interactive and multiple attribute decision‐making). First, a novel concept of Z‐fuzzy clouds is proposed to handle various factors of uncertainties by combining the advantages of the Z‐number theory, the interval‐valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets theory, and the cloud model theory, and the basic operations and Minkowski‐type distance measure of Z‐fuzzy clouds are also defined and discussed. Furthermore, more risk factors are added into the conventional three risk factors and to further build a multiple dimension risk factor system for better evaluating failures. Additionally, the experts’ bounded rationality and the risk factors’ interrelationships are considered by two developed weighting models. Finally, a real study case, sensitivity analysis, and several comparisons are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed model. Results demonstrate that the proposed model is more rational compared with the previous several methods.

Abstract: Composite materials are widely used in the automobile industry, compared with traditional mechanical connection, in terms of efficiency and manufacture cost structure, adhesively-bonded joints are usually the material most appropriate connection technology. Adhesively-bonded joints have good performance under fatigue load and the stress concentration is smaller. Lack of reliable design methods, long-term aging behavior, and fatigue life assessment of the adhesive joint, which are limits the bonded joints technology popularization and application. In order to describe the crack propagation process more accurately, an improved generalized crack propagation model was proposed to predict the fatigue life of composite bonded parts. The crack propagation process is divided into three stages, and the influence of machining technology, residual stress, and actual temperature in the process of machining are considered. The model provides an effective theoretical basis for accurately predicting the residual life of composite bonded structures. Experimental and simulation results show that the proposed model expands the prediction range of the existing theoretical model, and the prediction accuracy is significantly improved.

Abstract: The use of loss functions in quality assurance has grown steadily with the introduction of Taguchi's philosophy. The quadratic loss function has been used by decision-theoretic statisticians and economists for many years. Taguchi uses a modified form of the quadratic loss function to demonstrate the need to consider proximity to the target while assessing quality. Several authors have suggested that the traditional quadratic loss function is inadequate for assessing quality and quality improvement. A new, easily understood loss function, based on a reflection of the normal density function, is presented, and some associated statistical properties discussed.
